Cowboys News: KC dynasty’s rank, Aikman roasted for old Mahomes take, SB LIX odds

Now that the Chiefs have won their third Super Bowl in five years, where does their dynasty rank in NFL history? And how does it compare to the Cowboys’ glory days? We’ll look at that, plus more fallout from the big game: like why an old comment about Patrick Mahomes has come back to bite Troy Aikman, how the game’s first touchdown brought back memories of a long-lost Cowboys great, and what happened to get Post Malone out of that satin team jacket he was sporting. All that, plus oddsmakers have weighed in on the Cowboys’ chances to take home the next Lombardi Trophy.

Meanwhile, Dallas finally gets its man at defensive coordinator, but was the weekend’s drama over Mike Zimmer signing on the dotted line just manufactured intrigue? We’re mocking three rounds’ worth of talent, we’re scoping out free-agent wide receivers, we’re wondering what advice Tony Romo has been giving Tom Brady about the broadcast booth, and we’re remembering the man in the hat. Here’s all the News and Notes.

Sunday saw Rex Ryan point out on national TV that the Cowboys had not officially come to terms with Zimmer and even seemed to lobby for the job from the ESPN desk. On Monday morning, the lack of an actual deal started to look like a real problem, with some fearing a last-minute flip-flop. Things got worked out by end of day, though, and Zimmer says he is “excited and honored to be back.”

Sources with knowledge of the situation say that the Cowboys never waffled on Mike Zimmer, despite the intrigue that unfolded publicly over the weekend. It was simply about hammering out the details of the contract to a point where both sides could accept. Now, is it possible that Jerry Jones used some leverage during the process by intentionally getting Ryan tweaked up as he was about to go on TV? What do you think?

Heading into his fifth and final year of his rookie contract, discussions for an extension for Lamb are expected to ramp up as the offseason kicks into high gear. He confirmed to teammate Micah Parsons that “one of the top-paid receivers, for sure, if not the” highest-paid is “always the goal.” It could be a race between Lamb, Ja’Marr Chase, and Justin Jefferson to get that record-setting deal.

The 49ers’ Juaun Jennings became just the sixth non-quarterback to throw a touchdown in a Super Bowl. The founding member of that club was Cowboys fullback Robert Newhouse, whose unlikely perfect spiral to Golden Richards clinched a win over Denver Super Bowl XII. They play hadn’t worked a single time in practice, and Dallas ran it to the opposite side of the field than originally planned.

Back in 2019, the former Cowboys QB responded to a tweet about Mahomes having thrown 36% of Aikman’s career touchdowns by trumpeting, “Talk to me when he has 33% of my Super Bowl titles.” Fast forward five years, and now Mahomes has matched Aikman’s number of rings. Plenty of people saved those receipts and rubbed the Hall of Famer’s face in it after Sunday’s thriller.

The Cowboys are ranked seventh in the post-Super Bowl power rankings. They’ve won 36 regular-season games the past three years, but if Mike McCarthy can’t find the playoff success he had early in his time with the Packers and Dak Prescott can’t finally break through past the divisional round for the first time in his career, the Cowboys could be looking at a complete renovation in 2025.

Brady joining the Fox booth will be one of 2024’s biggest NFL stories. He’s been on a fact-finding mission lately, speaking often with Tony Romo. “Just two buddies talking football,” Romo said of the conversations. “I’m excited for him. Tom will exhaust every resource to be as good at this as anybody. I think me and him have similar traits in that we’re going to try and work as hard as humanly possible to be as good as we can be at anything that we care about. He’s doing that.”
