Cowboys News: Dak’s MVP chances, losing out on Leonard, punishment for Eagles’ sideline?

The Shaq Leonard sweepstakes came to an abrupt and disappointing end on Monday, with the Cowboys missing out on getting the services of the veteran linebacker despite a detailed effort from Dan Quinn on how he would have been deployed in Dallas. That’s just one storyline that will add to the intrigue of Eagles Week. We’ll get into that, including how Cowboys Nation reacted to Philly’s flop versus San Francisco and why the shameful dustup on the Eagles’ sideline could force further punishment or even changes for the Birds before this Sunday’s showdown.

Meanwhile, we get into what needs to happen for Dak Prescott to really have a chance at MVP, Prescott himself passes off the team’s Man of the Year torch, and the Cowboys face a steep climb out of the No. 5 spot in the NFC playoff picture. We look back at how the Cowboys and Seahawks delivered monster numbers for Amazon, Dan Quinn talks about his unit’s resiliency during crunch time, we put out an APB on MG, and we learn that it was a medical scare that kept the team’s longtime play-by-play man out of the booth on Thursday. All that, plus another power-rankings push can be found in this edition of News and Notes.

The Cowboys need to do very well over their next four games for Prescott to have a realistic chance at MVP. Historically speaking, anything other than a No. 1 or 2 seed in the postseason probably makes it a long shot, but Prescott could earn votes due to the simple fact that there’s no other runaway leader for the award.

The Cowboys climb one more spot and now sit at No. 3 in this week’s rankings. Philadelphia falls to No. 4 after their home loss on Sunday. Miami, Detroit, and Buffalo are also in the top 10; the Cowboys face all of them over the course of the next four games. The 49ers and Ravens sit at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively.

It is still anybody’s game in the NFC postseason chase. Currently the 5th seed, the Cowboys could win out from here and not even move out of that spot if the Eagles also finish 14-3. Realistically, Dallas needs to run the table and have both the 49ers and Eagles both suffer one additional loss. Depending on tiebreakers just isn’t going to fall in their favor for the No. 1 seed and the bye… all because of that Week 3 loss to the Cardinals.

Quinn raved about the defense stopping the Seahawks on fourth down on three consecutive drives to help get the win, even after a rough outing overall. The unit has now given up back-to-back 300-yard passers along with back-to-back 100-yard receivers, a trend they’ll look to reverse in Week 14.

Michael Gallup is missing in action from the Dallas Cowboys’ revamped explosive offense :: Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Eight different Cowboys caught a pass during Thursday’s win over the Seahawks. Gallup was not one of them. He still has not returned to his pre-injury form and has now fallen behind second-year receiver Jalen Tolbert and newcomer Brandin Cooks as a receiving target in the Dallas offense. The remaining five games (and then the playoffs) will effectively serve as Gallup’s time to prove what value he brings to this offense, if any.

The veteran linebacker visited both clubs last week, but will sign with the Eagles, it was announced Monday. He’ll join a star-studded defense that has been dealing with injuries and just got torched on Sunday by the 49ers. He could suit up and play this Sunday when the Eagles visit AT&T Stadium.

Leonard is admittedly not the player he was before his recent back surgeries (if he was, the Colts wouldn’t have released him). But he almost assuredly would have helped Dallas with depth and run defense. Quinn revealed that he put together a tape showing Leonard how he’d be deployed within the Cowboys defense. Now we’ll never know.

The team’s longtime play-by-play radio man fell ill on his way to the stadium last Thursday. The 74-year-old has been with the Cowboys since 1976. In that time, he’s missed two games in observance of a Jewish holiday, but has been sidelined by illness only one other time, in 1983. “Testing and resting,” Sham said. “Looking forward to next week.”

The league is expected to investigate the incident and follow up with the Philadelphia staff before their Week 14 visit to Dallas. It’s unclear if there will be any further discipline or changes made to current sideline procedures.
