Country Oaks hosts golf camp for local youth

Aug. 7—THOMASVILLE — The Country Oaks Golf Club hosted one of their many summer youth golf camps this past week. Local kids got the chance to come to the golf course and learn how to play the game.

Campers from ages seven to twelve took to the course to learn the basics of golf. At the beginning of the camp, kids worked on the basic skills like grip, posture, and stance. They also got to play fun games that kept them engaged while they improved their putting and chipping skills.

Mid-week is when the kids really got to hit the ball, taking to the driving range where they got to hit golf balls with irons and woods, learning a full and proper swing. Later in the week the kids got the chance to take to the course to use all of the skills they had learned, playing short holes at Country Oaks.

"Recreation is very very important. Not just golf, but all recreation," said manager of parks, recreation and golf for the city of Thomasville Mike Owens. "I think, getting kids outside, getting them to recreate, whether it's golf, or basketball, or anything like that, it's very important in today's world. Everybody's so electronic right now and inside and game driven, phone driven, and iPad driven. I think it's just very important to get them outside and do some things."
