The cost for Russell Wilson and Sean Payton

The Denver Broncos acquired Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks last spring in a blockbuster trade… and they likely are experiencing buyers remorse. The Russell Wilson they received was hardly the perennial Pro Bowler the NFL world witnessed in Seattle for a decade. Instead, he was a bottom five quarterback this past season.

Denver made a significant investment in Wilson last year, and sometimes you have to sink a little more cost in investments like this. The Broncos made another massive deal, trading for head coach Sean Payton from the New Orleans Saints. Payton will undoubtedly be an improvement over Nathanial Hackett, but he didn’t come cheap.

Essentially, look at it this way: the Denver Broncos traded three first round picks, three second round picks, a fifth round pick, and three starting caliber NFL players for the right to have Russell Wilson and Sean Payton.

Perhaps Sean Payton can turn Russell Wilson the Broncos around, and last year will be looked at as a bizarre outlier. But he had better do so fast, as Denver has mortgaged their future on these two.
