Corning's Angie McKane adds to her records as athletes shine at Watkins Glen invitational

The 15-team Girls Invitational in the Glen brought an early taste of the types of performances to expect at the New York state girls swimming and diving championships, culminating with several pool records and state-qualifying performances Saturday during the finals of the two-day event at Watkins Glen High School.

Corning senior Angie McKane dazzled with two typically dominant performances. The three-time state champion finished first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.09) and 100 freestyle (51.21), with combined margin of victory 12 seconds.

She broke pool records in both events and set a 50 freestyle pool record with her lead leg of 23.41 seconds in the 200 freestyle relay. McKane holds the pool record in the 100 butterfly (54.66), an event she didn't compete in at this meet.

Fairport of Section 5 took team honors with a score of 284, followed by New Paltz of Section 9 (265), Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake-Scotia of Section 2 and Section 4 pace-setters Horseheads (230), Corning (194), Watkins Glen (193) and Ithaca (189).

Waverly's Mira Kittle finished first in the 100-yard backstroke as Watkins Glen High School hosted the Girls Invitational in the Glen on Sept. 23, 2023.

By the numbers

Eleven of the 12 event winners reached standards to qualify for November's New York State Championships at the Webster Aquatic Center, with the 500 freestyle the lone exception. All told, there were 15 performances that reached the state standard.

Watkins Glen pool records were broken in five events.

Divers on top of their game

Owego Free Academy's Kaelyn Katchuk won the diving with a sky-high score of 558.8 to beat out runner-up Brooke Terwilliger of Corning (547.5), who earlier this season set a Section 4 six-dive record. Both scores were above the previous pool record of 546.45.

Corning's Cella McLaughlin joined them in hitting the state standard of 440 with a third-place score of 442.75, earning her first trip to the state meet.

The other Section 4 winner was Waverly's Mira Kittle, who took the 100 backstroke in a state-qualifying 1:00.01.

McKane dominating as a senior

McKane committed in the spring to swim at the Division I college level for Army. So far her senior season has been a tour de force filled with numerous school and pool records.

She is already near or below her winning times in the butterfly (54.05) and 50 freestyle (23.56) from last year's state finals. Her 50 time Saturday was worthy of All-American consideration. McKane's butterfly times from the previous two years earned her All-America honors and her top fly this season is 54.12.

"I'm pretty satisfied with how the meet went," McKane said. "I'm really proud of a lot of my teammates. (Cella) made states for the first time. Personally, with my own times I think it's really good to see where I'm at in the middle of the season. It's been five weeks since we started training together as a team and I'm already pretty much where I was at when I was rested at the end of last season."

McKane said there's room to grow, adding her 100 freestyle was above her personal best and she can push harder next time in that event. She said her backstroke wasn't in peak form Saturday in the IM, but she still handily broke the pool mark of 2:06.71 set in 2007 by Ithaca's Lauren Norberg.

Her historic junior season came under adverse conditions she has avoided this year.

"One of the big things is I'm not sick. Last season I was sick all season," she said. "I'm training twice a day three times a week. I'm happy with where I'm at. Definitely still hungry for more. At the Elmira invite that's coming up in a couple weeks, I definitely want to hit that really hard, hopefully go for a couple personal bests there."
