Copan Hornets pull off overtime win against Barnsdall Tuesday

Following the Christmas break, the Copan Hornets pulled out a big overtime win Tuesday, defeating Osage County rivals Barnsdall 66-65 on the Hornet’s hardwood.

Struggling offensively most of the game, it was Copan’s Karson Woodworth who sank the game-winning basket, taking the Class B team to 10-3 on the season.

“We’ve been struggling to find a groove over the break, but tonight the light bulb clicked on for us in the second half,” said Hornet head Coach Kolton Stacy. “They left me almost speechless because of how proud I was of them. Tonight is the reason why I coach.”

Tryston Easter continues to dominate in scoring with 31 points for the Hornets, followed by Shooter Brewington with 16 points.

Barnsdall (Class A) is now 5-4 on the season. Leading the way in scoring was Braden Byers with 25 points and Maverick Lanphear with 15 points.

On the girl’s side, the Barnsdall Lady Panthers improved to 6-4 with a 42-30 win over the Copan Lady Hornets.

Lady Hornet Zoey Secondine led in scoring with 9 points, followed by teammate Elyzabeth Odum with 7 points.

“It is hard to play games when we aren’t back in school,” said Lady Hornet head coach Kristy Bryan. “We haven’t had everyone at practice once during the break. Hopefully we can settle in and get back on track next week.”

Leading Lady Panther scorers included Lyndsi Hicks with 8 points and Khloe Gott and Shaylee Roach, both with 7 points.

Nowata vs Caney Valley, Kansas

Nowata’s basketball teams both garnered wins over Caney Valley KS Tuesday night in Nowata.

The Ironmen won decisively over the Bullpups, 70-53, with Kaleb Bashford leading the way with 23 points for Nowata.

Nowata Ironman head coach Derick Ott said he was very impressed with players Ryan Walton (19 points) and Chelo Prince (14 points), who both had career highs.

“Both of these guys are starting to play up to their potential,” said coach Ott. “We hit nine threes which is a high for us, so confidence was really high on the offensive side. Defensively we got a little complacent in the second half, but overall we had a lot of positives.”

Nowata is on a two-game winning streak and will be competing in the Chelsea Tournament which begins Thursday.

Leading scorers for the Caney Valley KS Bullpups were Colton Hightower and Ben Matthews, both with 12 points. Layne Deny had 9 points, all of which came from the three-point line.

In the girl’s game, it was Nowata picking up the win 52-44.

The Lady Ironmen had a slow start learning to play with new point guard NaDean Stamps, but picked up the pace in the second half with a three-pointer from Mesa Holt.

Lady Ironmen coach Thad Hewitt had to utilize some younger players in the fourth quarter with Stamps and Dakota Brown both fouling out.

“We finished strong with sophomore Roxanne Hill passing to freshman Jaylin Trotter for a layup late in the fourth and clutch free throws from Brown and Jordyn Ashley to ice the game,” said coach Hewitt. “We got some good minutes from young kids.”

Ashley led the way in scoring with 22 points, followed by Stamps with 19.

High scorers for the Caney Valley KS Lady Bullpups were Anna Washburn with 11 points and Addison Regis and Kim Owens with 8 points each.

The Nowata Lady Ironmen also play in the Chelsea Tournament beginning Thursday.
