Confusion emerges concerning whether the Eagles hired Matt Patricia as a senior defensive assistant

The Eagles GM and head coach are set to meet with the media on Thursday, and a quiet announcement about coaching staff additions now has some controversy.

Around noon on Thursday, the team’s official website announced new coaching hires, promotions, and other changes.

One name on the list was former Patriots assistant and Lions head coach Matt Patricia, who was supposed to be a Senior Defensive Assistant.

By 2:00 PM Eastern time, Patricia was no longer listed among the coaching hires.

Patricia spent 14 years with the Patriots before becoming head coach of the Lions in 2018.

He clashed with All-Pro cornerback Darius Slay, playing a considerable role in Philadelphia acquiring the cornerback via trade.

Patricia returned to the Patriots in 2021 and assumed the offensive coordinator role in 2022.

The Eagles hired Sean Desai to serve as defensive coordinator following the departure of Jonathan Gannon, who is now the head coach of the Cardinals, and a complete defensive overhaul could be in play.
