Comeback Kids: Top Greater Taunton high school sports performances for Jan. 15-21

TAUNTON— Another week of high school sports action is upon us in the Greater Taunton area.

Last week, several local teams continued to build on their success as the first MIAA power rankings of the season were released for basketball and hockey.

Here's a look at the Greater Taunton area's top performing high school athletes from the third week of January.

Sunday

Boys Basketball

Dray Thielker led the way for Taunton (8-4, 4-4 Hockomock) with 20 points while Cyrus Morissette had a double double of 11 points and 10 assists, Kenzel Jeanmichel had 14 points, five rebounds and two blocks and Tyson Carter had 11 points and eight rebounds as the Tigers beat New Bedford 73-72 at home in non-league action.

Cason Faulk led the way for Bridgewater-Raynham (5-8, 1-3 SEC) with 12 points while Bobby Louis had nine and Noah Perry-Lewis had eight as the Trojans fell 68-50 to Xaverian on the road in non-league action.

Girls Basketball

Taryn Campbell led the way for Taunton (11-1, 7-1 Hockomock) with 23 points while Jillian Doherty had 12 and Chelsea Bousquet, Alexi Haywood and Cali Melo all had nine as the Tigers beat New Bedford 71-53 on the road in non-league action.

Camden Strandberg led the way for Bridgewater-Raynham (8-3, 3-1 SEC) with 18 points and three rebounds while Libby Cronin had 12 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals and Brenna Woodbury had 11 points, seven steals, four rebounds and three assists as the Trojans fell 62-52 to Dartmouth at home in SEC action. This marked the first ever SEC loss for B-R, snapping a 47 league game winning streak. Their last league loss before Sunday came against Barnstable in the Old Colony League on Feb. 12, 2016.

Boys Indoor Track

Dighton-Rehoboth finished 8th overall on 15 points at the MSTCA Division 4 relays. Tim Zibrida was the top Falcon finisher in field events, coming in fifth in the shot put with a personal best throw of 13.26 meters while Spencer Jones finished seventh in the high jump with a personal best height of 1.73 meters.

Girls Indoor Track

Dighton-Rehoboth finished 18th overall on four points at the MSTCA Division 4 relays. Ryann Welzel was the top Falcon finisher in field events, coming in third in the shot put with a personal best throw of 10.37 meters.

Saturday

Boys Hockey

Cam Tomaszycki had a 30 save shutout in net for Taunton (8-3-1, 4-2-1 Hockomock) as the Tigers played North Attleboro to a 0-0 tie on the road in Hockomock action.

Andrew Flanagan and Nick Falcione both found the back of the net for Southeastern/Bristol-Plymouth (9-3, 7-0 MAC) while Nick Sturdevant recorded a pair of assists as the Hawks beat Tri-County 2-1 at home in MAC action. The victory marked the ninth in a row for the co-op.

Girls Hockey

Camrynne Shanteler scored the lone goal for Mansfield/Oliver Ames/Foxboro/Taunton (4-5-1, 2-2-0 Hockomock), assisted by Annabelle Fanjoy, as the Warriors fell 4-1 to Westwood on the road in non-league action.

West Bridgewater/East Bridgewater/Bridgewater-Raynham/Bristol-Plymouth/Southeastern/Middleboro (6-6) fell 2-0 on the road to Hopkinton/Dover-Sherborn.

Gymnastics

Lindsay Woodbury led the way for Bridgewater-Raynham/West Bridgewater (2-1, 2-1 Cranberry League), winning the all around with a career-high total score of 36.8 while Lily Moreira finished second all-around with a total score of 36.75 as the Trojans defeated Mashpee/Falmouth/Barnstable 145.8-137 in Cranberry action. Natalia Flores won the vault with a 9.35 while Woodbury finished second with a 9.2. Moreira won the bars with a career-high 9.4 while Woodbury finished second with a career-high 9.0 and Amanda Lalli came in third with a career-high of 8.9. Cecilia Meoli won the bar with a 9.45 while Woodbury finished second with a 9.3 and Moreira finished third with a 9.1. Moreira won the floor with a career high 9.45 while Woodbury and Lalli each earned a 9.2 to tie for second.

Boys Indoor Track

Anthony Pettijohn was the top finisher for Taunton (1-4, 1-4 Hockomock), coming in third in the long jump with a personal best distance of 6.34 meters while the relay team of Dmitrius Shearrion, Jared Spencer, Kadon Jordan and Carlos Cruz finished eighth in the 4x50 meter (0:23.3) and ninth in the 4x200 meter (1:34.21) as the Tigers finished 18th overall on one point at the MSTCA Division 1 Relays.

The 4x200 meter relay team of Kauan Bento, Connor Johnson, Joseph Manning and Evan Bray finished fifth with a time of 1:34.56 while the 4x400 meter relay team of Bento, Dan Leet, Johnson and Riley Frisch finished sixth with a time of 3:38.47 and the 4x800 meter relay team of Leet, Ryan Hall, Frisch and Anthony Matta finished fifth with a time of 8:38.38 as Bridgewater-Raynham (2-0, 2-0 SEC) finished 11th overall with 10 points at the MSTCA Division 2 Relays. In field events, Bento had the best result for the Trojans as he finished ninth in the high jump with a height of 1.73 meters.

Girls Indoor Track

The 4x50 meter relay team of Chloe Blanc, Grace Inacio, Ava Uhl and Nevaeh Young finished sixth overall with a time of 0:25.48 as Taunton (1-4, 1-4 Hockomock) finished tied for 18th on one point at the MSTCA Division 1 Relays. The top finisher in field events for the Tigers was Sophia Olaniyan, who came in 23rd in the shot put with a top throw of 8.91 meters.

The relay team of Lily Giurleo, Mahalia Forbes-Smith, Emily Keefe and Sydney O'Donnell finished third in the SMR 1600 (4:21.29) and fourth in the 4x400 meter (4:19.25) as Bridgewater-Raynham (2-0, 2-0 SEC) finished 13th overall on 6.5 points at the MSTCA Division 2 Relays. In field events, Beyoncé Gray had the top finish for the Trojans, coming in 19th in the high jump with a height of 1.35 meters.

Wrestling

Ethan Harris broke the all-time wins record for Taunton (9-4, 3-1 Hockomock) as he won the 190 lb. weight class at the Cape Cod Invitational at Sandwich High School and the Tigers won overall as a team with 244 points. Also winning their respective weight classes were Mike Leskoski (120), Landen Rodrigues (126), John Mandeville (144), William Buffington (160), Kingston DaCosta (175) and Elijah Prophete (215). Gabe Leskoski (150), Anthony Viera (157) and Bobby Tran (285) all finished second while Cody Truelson (113) finished fourth.

Jacob Bettencourt (144), Nathan Hicks (157) and Jack Ramondetta (165) won all four of their respective matches as Bristol-Plymouth (20-3) beat BC High 39-36, Durfee 57-24, Hanover 40-36 and Marshfield 66-17 in a non-league quint meet at Marshfield High School.

Griffin Machie (106), Luis Garcia (113), Malakai Risotti (175) and Brady Benfeito (285) won their respective weight classes as Bristol Aggie/Dighton-Rehoboth won the Cohasset Invitational at Cohasset High School with 292.5 points. Finishing second in their respective weight classes were Brennan Chisholm (120), Ryan Moitoso (138), David Hunt (144), Josh Hoskins (150), Jack Swan (157) and Jonathan Borges (165).

Friday

Boys Basketball

Troy Santos led the way for Taunton (7-4, 4-4 Hockomock) with 33 points as the Tigers fell 81-72 to Milford at home in Hockomock action.

Bridgewater-Raynham (5-7, 1-3 SEC) fell 78-64 to Durfee at home in SEC action.

Girls Basketball

Chelsea Bousquet led the way for Taunton (10-1, 7-1 Hockomock) with 11 points while Jillian Doherty had 10 and Taryn Campbell as the Tigers beat Milford 42-33 on the road in Hockomock action. With the win, Taunton clinches a spot in the Division 1 tournament for the first time since 2013.

Camden Strandberg led the way for Bridgewater-Raynham (8-2, 3-0 SEC) with 14 points and nine rebounds while Reese Bartlett had 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals as the Trojans defeated Durfee 35-33 on the road in SEC action.

Bristol-Plymouth (2-7, 0-4 MAC) fell 46-22 to Holbrook on the road in MAC action.

Haleigh Kelley led the way for Dighton-Rehoboth (1-12, 0-7 SCC) with eight points while Maddie Blenkush had seven and Megan Keane had six as the Falcons fell 53-28 to Somerset Berkley on the road in SCC action.

Boys Swimming

Blake Couto won the 200 yard freestyle as Taunton (0-5, 0-5 Hockomock) fell 91-37 to North Attleboro on the road in Hockomock action. Danny Murudumbay finished second in the 500 yard freestyle and third in the 50 yard freestyle while Harrison Layden finished second in the 100 yard butterfly and the relay team of Murudumbay, Layden, Maddox Chaves and Couto finished second in the 200 yard freestyle and third in the 400 yard freestyle.

Girls Swimming

Abigail Fernandes (50 yard freestyle and 100 yard freestyle) and Megan Viveiros (100 yard butterfly and 500 yard freestyle) were double winners for Taunton (3-2, 3-2 Hockomock) as the Tigers beat North Attleboro 88-78 on the road in Hockomock action. Emma Bradley won the 100 yard backstroke and finished second in the 200 yard freestyle while Eliana Gay finished second in both the 200 yard individual medley and 100 yard butterfly, Mila Dafov finished second in the 100 yard freestyle and third in the 100 yard backstroke, Lilia Ballantine finished third in the 100 yard breaststroke and Elizabeth Tobolski finished third in the 200 yard individual medley. The 400 yard freestyle team of Viveiros, Dafov, Bradley and Fernandes won their race while the 200 yard medley relay team of Rachel Maynard, Ballantine, Gay and Dafov finished second and the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Tobolski, Morgan McAloon, Trinity Wilson and Gay finished third.

Boys Basketball

Ryan Donovan led the way for Bristol-Plymouth (3-6, 2-4 MAC) with 26 points as the Craftsmen fell 80-41 to Blue Hills on the road in MAC action.

Aidan Marando led the way for Dighton-Rehoboth (4-7, 1-6 SCC) with 17 points while Jordan Dietz had 13 as the Falcons fell 75-55 to Somerset Berkley at home in SCC action.

Girls Basketball

Gabby Chor led the way for Bristol-Plymouth (2-6, 0-3 MAC) with 10 points as the Craftsmen fell 51-27 to Blue Hills at home in MAC action.

Boys Hockey

Taunton (8-3, 4-2 Hockomock) fell 4-0 to Mansfield at home in Hockomock action.

Boys Indoor Track

Dmitrius Shearrion won both the 55 meter dash (0:06.73) and the 300 meter (0:35.26) while Ancil Alexander won the shot put (personal best of 44'2.5") as Taunton (1-4, 1-4 Hockomock) fell 56.5-43.5 to Milford in a Hockomock dual meet. Earning dual meet wins for the Tigers were Drew Alves, who finished ninth overall in the high jump with a height of 5'6", Anthony Pettijohn, who finished sixth overall in the long jump with a personal best distance of 20'4.5", and the 4x400 meter relay team of Corbin Melo, Jeremy Kneif, Brayden Salvo and Chris Wallace that finished third overall with a time of 3:44.61.

Girls Indoor Track

Grace Inacio won both the 55 meter dash (personal best of 0:07.75) and the 300 meter (personal best of 0:43.66) as Taunton (1-4, 1-4 Hockomock) beat Milford 71-20 in a Hockomock dual meet. Earning dual meets for the Tigers were Braelyn Nichols in the 600 meter (13th overall, 1:55.68), Reese Lane in the 1000 meter (25th overall, personal best of 3:54.34), Emersyn DePonte in the mile (sixth overall, 5:48.75), Colby Dunham in the two mile (seventh overall, 13:38.5), Renee Leao in the 55 meter hurdles (seventh overall, personal best of 0:09.52), Sophia Olaniyan in the shot put (fourth overall, personal best of 33'1.75"), Brooke Hylander in the high jump (11th overall, 4'6") and Bella Coughlin in the long jump (21st overall, 13'11.25"). Taunton swept the top three dual meet spots in both the 55 meter dash and the mile to earn their first win of the season.

Wednesday

Boys Basketball

Nick Sturdevant led the way for Southeastern/Bristol-Plymouth (8-3, 6-0 MAC) with a pair of goals and an assist while Cam Wilbur, Andrew Flanagan and Cole Tammaro all found the back of the net as the Hawks beat South Shore Tech 5-3 on the road in MAC action.

Dighton-Rehoboth/Seekonk (6-4, 2-2 SCC) fell 2-0 to Somerset Berkley at home in SCC action.

Wrestling

Mike Leskoski (120), Landen Rodrigues (126), John Mandeville (144), Gabe Leskoski (150), William Buffington (165), Kingston DaCosta (175), Ethan Harris (190), Elijah Prophete (215) and Bobby Tran (285) all won their respective matches as Taunton (9-4, 3-1 Hockomock) beat North Attleboro 46-30 on the road in a Hockomock dual meet. The win for Harris marked his 122nd career win, tying 2022 graduate Christian Balmain for the most wins in program history.

Lucy Latour led the way for Dighton-Rehoboth (1-11, 0-6 SCC) with a double double of 16 points and 10 rebounds while Maddie Blenkush had seven points as the Falcons fell 54-40 to Greater New Bedford at home in SCC action.

Jonathan McGrath led the way for Taunton (8-2, 4-1 Hockomock League) with a pair of goals and an assist while Conner Goranson and Tre Nadeau each had a goal and an assist and Jamie Vallarelli, Owen Hathaway and Travis Cashman all recorded assists as the Tigers put up four unanswered goals to beat Middleboro/Carver/Wareham 4-3 in overtime at home in non-league action.
