Colts’ Carson Wentz (ankles) feeling ‘way better’ entering Week 4

It was clear how limited Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz was playing through ankle sprains in the Week 3 loss against the Tennessee Titans, but it seems better days may be ahead.

Though Wentz likely won’t be practicing in full this week, the 28-year-old quarterback told the media Wednesday that he feels progress is already being made when it comes to improving his mobility.

“Way better. I don’t think I’ll be full practicing but just the fact that I’ll be able to go out there and do some limited work,” Wentz told reporters Wednesday. “I was not in that place by any means last week. Came out of the game relatively unscathed with that, so it’s continuing to heal and be in a better place every day.”

Much of Wentz’s game harps on the ability to get outside the pocket and extend plays. Sometimes it’s to his detriment. Sometimes it helps the Colts make a big play. Without that element to his game, it was clear he was uncomfortable behind an offensive line that is allowing pressure at an extremely high rate.

Wentz didn’t utilize his checkdowns as much as he should have in Week 3. The limited mobility and pressure the offensive line was allowing resulted in a porous stat line from Wentz and the entire offense.

Even so, Wentz doesn’t feel the limited mobility was a major factor in the loss.

“I didn’t think it happened too many times. You can look at a couple that maybe I would have done something different,” Wentz said. “But at the end of the day, I don’t think that was the limiting factor in terms of why we didn’t win the ball game.”

It was encouraging to see Wentz log a limited practice to begin the week, which is something he didn’t do last week. We should expect a bit more mobility from Wentz against the Dolphins, but it remains to be seen how much of an impact that will make on the Colts grabbing their first win.
