Winless no more. How Meadowbrook boys basketball broke into the win column Tuesday night

BYESVILLE — A frustrating season to this point got a little better Tuesday night for a young Meadowbrook boys basketball squad and head coach Teryn Jarrett.

Coming into the a non-league matchup with visiting Ridgewood High, the winless Colts were tired of near misses and good efforts with nothing to show for it.

Now they do.

And after 32 minutes of hard fought action, Meadowbrook finally picked up its first win of the season, 49-40.

"You can only have so many morale victories where you say 'we battled hard' and stuff like that," Jarrett said. "We finally scored more points than the other team and got the win and we needed that outcome. Walking in here after the game, there was just a huge weight lifted off our players and coaches, and I'm very proud of each and every one in that locker room."

It was a solid team effort for Meadowbrook (1-10), Jarrett explained, with contributions coming from up and down the roster.

"That's got to be our style of basketball right now," Jarrett said. "We have to have everyone all in and giving maximum effort. Just need to play hard and compete each and every time out on the floor."

Not a 'thing of beauty,' but it got the job done

Tuesday's win was a grind for the Colts.

"It might not have been a pretty game to watch from the stands, but it was a thing of beauty for our players and coaching staff," Jarrett said. "Our kids played hard and got the job done, and finally get a reward for all the hard work they have put it all year."

Sophomore Masyn Campbell finished with a game-high 18 points while junior Colton Delancey added 14 and freshman Bentley Sedor eight for Medowbrook.

"Masyn came up big for us in the scoring department," Jarrett said. "He shot the ball well tonight, and also attacked the paint a few times. When we can get that type of offensive production from him it takes the pressure off."

Sophomore Jackson Cabot paced Ridgewood (3-10) with 13 points, while sophomore Logan Ridenbaugh and junior Kole Robinson each finished with 10 points for the Generals.

"Both Colton and Bentley did a nice job adding some scoring and getting on the boards tonight," Jarrett said. "They both gave us a nice strong presence inside the paint which was a real key tonight."

Colts close out first win with perfect execution

A perfect example of the Colts improved offensive execution came in the late stages of the fourth quarter with the Generals attempting to rally.

Meadowbrook pushed its lead to 41-33 with 5:21 left on a deep 3-pointer by Delancey.

Ridenbaugh answered for the Generals, getting loose inside with a basket to pull within 41-35 at 4:59.

Jarrett instructed his team to run some clock with a deliberate offensive half court offense, using crisp passing and movement to work for a high percentage shot opportunity.

That's what his Colts did, running the clock down to 2:30 when Burris found Campbell inside where he was fouled.

Campbell calmly knocked down the pair of foul shots to push the lead to 43-35.

Meadowbrook closed out that its first victory by outscoring the visitors 6-5 the rest of the way.

"We are starting to learn how to play a half court game and that's the biggest thing," Jarrett said. "We would not have been able to execute like that earlier in the season, we would have let the other team speed us up. And we would have struggled and probably lost that game.

"But now we are possessing the ball a lot longer than we have most of the season," Jarrett said. "Our half court offensive execution was very good in a late game setting when we needed it. I thought Jacob Burris and Michael Ray were both very good running the show and getting us into our offense."
