College women's hockey: Clarkson shuts down BC; SLU defeats Mercyhurst in opener

Sep. 30—POTSDAM — Clarkson University extended its season-opening scoreless streak to three games as it blanked Boston College 3-0 in a nonleague women's hockey game Friday night at Cheel Arena.

Goaltender Michelle Pasiechnyk stopped 20 shots for her second shutout of the season for the 3-0 Golden Knights.

Boston College was playing in its first game of the season and Clarkson outshot the Eagles 9-1 in the first eight minutes of the game all while killing off a Boston College power play.

Laurence Frenette struck for Clarkson 7 minutes, 54 seconds in for the early lead. Clarkson held a 17-2 shot advantage after one period.

Darcie Lappin and Anne Cherkowski scored goals for Clarkson in the third period, in which the Golden Knights killed off two more Eagles power plays. BC went 0-for-4 with the advantage.

Clarkson and Boston College face off at 3 p.m. today at Cheel.

ST. LAWRENCE 5, MERCYHURST 1

St. Lawrence University received scoring from five players and captured its season-opening game by beating Mercyhurst during Alumni Weekend at Appleton Arena in Canton.

Taylor Lum, Julia Gosling, Anna Segedi, Kennedy Wilson and Abby Hehl each connected for the Saints in the nonleague game. It was Hehl's first collegiate goal. Mae Batherson assisted on two goals and Segedi contributed an assist.

Goalie Emma-Sofie Nordstrom turned away 23 shots for SLU.

Thea Johansson scored for Mercyhurst (2-1). Goalie Ena Nystrom made 42 saves.
