College Weekly: Siena Heights football upsets Concordia

It was a busy week of college sports with Jim Deere stepping down as head coach of Adrian College football during the bye week while Siena Heights football knocked off No. 12 Concordia 24-21.

The Saints improved to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in Mid-States Football Association play behind another big game from Ethan LoPresto and great defensive effort.

LoPresto rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown to make it a 7-7 game late in the first quarter. Shamar Askin returned a pick for a score later in the first and then quarterback Elijah Taylor punched in a 1-yard score to make it 21-7.

The Cardinals made it a 21-14 game at the half and the score stuck until the Saints went up 24-14 with 8:46 to go off a David Medvedik 32-yard field goal.

Concordia scored with 2:20 left, but SHU never gave the ball back.

Taylor was 18 of 31 for 213 yards and two interceptions. Bobby Opalewski had five receptions for 88 yards.

Isaiah Pizzo and Clarke Hamilton each had an interception while Hamilton added 2.5 sacks. Nico Fernandez had 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and a pass breakup.

The win snapped an eight-game losing streak against Concordia.

ADRIAN

Volleyball

After losing in five sets to Albion on Saturday, the Bulldogs bounced back from their first MIAA loss to sweep Kalamazoo 25-15, 25-17, 25-15 at home Wednesday.

Adrian (11-9, 4-1 MIAA) got 10 kills, four digs and a block from Amber Morris while Mallory Dorow had nine kills and three blocks. Hailey Farrell had 28 assists, eight digs, three aces, two kills and a block while Mya Minjares had 13 digs.

The Bulldogs took on Transylvania at Albion and lost in four sets 23-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-17.

Morris had eight kills, four blocks, three digs and an ace while Mya Minjares had 18 digs and Hailey Farrell had 24 assists, five digs and four aces.

Women's Soccer

The Bulldogs played to a 0-0 draw with Albion at home Wednesday before falling 2-1 to Kalamazoo on the road, moving the team's record to 7-5-3 overall and 3-3-1 in MIAA play.

Annamarie Fossmoen had the goal against the Hornets.

Men's Soccer

The Bulldogs lost 3-0 to Kalamazoo at home on Tuesday. Adrian is 1-11-2 and 0-5 in MIAA play.

SIENA HEIGHTS

Volleyball

The Saints came back from a four-set loss to Aquinas on the road Saturday to beat Rochester 25-14, 25-14, 26-28, 25-21 on the road in WHAC play Wednesday.

SHU got 14 kills, four blocks and two digs from Olivia Norman while Aubrey Bates had 35 assists, 11 digs, six kills and two aces and Payton Osborne had a whopping 33 digs in the win.

The Saints lost 26-24, 21-25, 25-23, 25-13 on Friday at home against Concordia.

Norman added 14 kills and two blocks while Devyne Eisenhauer had 11 kills, six digs, three aces and a block. Bates had 41 assists, six digs, four kills and two aces while Osborne had 18 digs.

They wrapped up the week with a five-set win 25-21, 25-23, 14-25, 19-25, 15-8 against Lawrence Tech on Saturday at home to move to 19-7 and 11-5 in the WHAC.

Norman had 15 kills and four blocks while Eisenhauer had 12 kills, 17 digs and three aces and Kinsey Wagner (Onsted) had 11 kills and two blocks.

Bates had 48 assists, eight digs, four blocks, three kills and an ace while Osborne had 18 digs.

Golf

The Siena Heights men's and women's teams concluded the fall season with first place finishes at the Cleary Invite on Monday.

The Saints men won with a score of 303 with Tecumseh graduate Joe Nowak earning medalist honors with a 72. Ben Ellis took sixth (76) and Drew Grennes ninth (79) while Jake Gross and Clinton graduate Garrett Ramos each shot 78.

The women's team shot 334 with Leah LaFleur taking second (81) while Skylar Whitman was fourth (83), Tecumseh graduate Bethany Nowak was fifth (84) and Megan Paczas took 10th (86).

Women's Soccer

In the battle of unbeatens in Adrian on Wednesday night, Siena Heights and Aquinas played to a 0-0 draw as the two remained deadlocked atop the WHAC standings.

On Saturday, the Saints beat Lourdes 2-0 at home with Marissa Young and Parker Cheney scoring the goals

SHU (10-0-5, 6-0-2 WHAC) had Caitlyn Harwood make five saves to post the shutouts, all five coming against Aquinas.

Men's Soccer

The Saints lost 4-0 to Aquinas on the road Wednesday and then at home Saturday against Lourdes, 3-2, to fall to 6-8-2 overall and 2-5-2 in WHAC play.

Guilherme Ramos had both goals against Lourdes while Carlos Musoles had an assist.
