COLLEGE SPORTS ROUNDUP: Red Raiders rout Jackson State in 50-point win

HOUSTON — It was a good homecoming for Kevin Obanor and an even better day for the Texas Tech men’s basketball team.

Obanor scored 16 points, while KJ Allen chipped in a career-high 15, to help the Red Raiders secure a 102-52 win over Jackson State as part of the second annual HBCU Roundball Classic at the Delmar Fieldhouse.

“I thought everybody got in there and played hard,” Texas Tech coach Mark Adams said in a postgame radio interview. ”Our defense excellent in the first half. We played a nearly perfect first half. Moved the ball well and made the right plays. Played basketball the right way. So I was really proud of them.”

With the victory, Texas Tech (8-2) netted a season-high 13 three-point shots — including 10 in the second half alone — to increase their winning streak to four games by downing the Tigers (1-10).

D’Maurian Williams led the charge in the 3-point department, making 5-of-6 triples in the second half, toward a season-best 17 points. Jaylon Tyson (11 points, five rebounds) and De’Vion Harmon (10 points) also chipped in on the offensive end.

On the defensive end, the Red Raiders turned in one of the best performances, statistically, of the season by owning a 47-0 advantage in points off turnovers while forcing 30 turnovers. Texas Tech, on the other hand, turned the ball over a season-best eight times — besting its mark of nine against Eastern Washington on Tuesday.

The Red Raiders eclipsed the century mark for the first time since a 101-58 triumph over Northwestern State and bested an offensive-best output of 79 in a win over Georgetown earlier in the season. Most encouraging was the 56 bench points, which was well above the season average of 18.4.

Texas Tech is scheduled to host Houston Christian at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

LCU women’s basketball

LAS VEGAS — No.13 Georgia Southwestern State, carried by a combined 35 points from Kayla Langley (18 points) and Jolicia Williams (17), en route to claiming a 70-59 win over Lubbock Christian in a Holiday Hoops Classic contest Friday at South Point Arena. LCU had rallied from an 11-point second half deficit and trailed 61-52, after Jacquelyn Levay converted a four-point play for the Hurricanes with 5:56 remaining, before LCU went on a 7-0 run. Audrey Robertson had a layup to begin the run, which was followed by a three-pointer from Carli Bostwick and a bucket from Audrey Spurgin to cut LCU's deficit to 61-59. It unfortunately would be as close as LCU would get to overcoming the deficit. A trio of missed field goals and turnovers kept LCU off the scoreboard over the final 3:32 of the game, as GSW made six of their final eight shot attempts.
