COLLEGE SPORTS BRIEFS: Lady Buffs earn No. 3 seed in NCAA Tourney, host regional

The West Texas A&M softball team is in the postseason once again.

The Lady Buffs earned another berth to the NCAA Division II Tournament as announced Monday by the NCAA's headquarters. WT earned the No. 3 seed for the South Central Region and the right to host one side of the bracket at Schaeffer Park in Canyon. West Texas A&M is scheduled to take on sixth-seeded Cameron in the first-round, while Colorado Christian drew the No. 2 seed and will face the No. 7 seed, St. Mary's. The double elimination style bracket will start on Thursday. No. 1 seed UT Tyler plays host to No. 8 St. Edward's, while No. 4 Oklahoma Christian takes on No. 5 Lubbock Christian on the other side of the South Central Region bracket. Additional information on the South Central Regional tournament is set to be released later in week.

WT women’s golf

The West Texas A&M women's golf team is set to compete Monday through Wednesday at the NCAA Division II West Regional held at the Golf Club of Dallas hosted by Dallas Baptist University. The Lady Buffs brought home the program's second Lone Star Conference championship after defeating DBU 3-2 in the finals of the LSC medal match play round. DBU's pair of wins came from Faith DeLaGarza and Julia Garcia at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, respectively. WT secured wins from Anna Nomrowski and Rylie Cook. Going into the 16th hole, Campbell trailed Olivia Mitchell by three strokes. On the 16th hole, the Lady Buffs' senior made her par putt while Mitchell turned in an 8 on the par four, allowing Campbell to take a one-stroke advantage. That hole proved to be the difference in the match as both Campbell and Mitchell went on to par the final two holes.

With a top four finish, the Lady Buffs would advance to the NCAA Division II Championship held May 18-20 at the Fox Run Golf Club in Eureka, Mo.

WT track and field

The West Texas A&M Track and Field won the Lone Star Conference Championship for the third consecutive year and will go down in LSC history as the first men's and women's team to ever do so.  The Lady Buffs earned 280.50 team points to take first place. They dominated early in on the championship and held onto first place throughout the weekend of competition. Angelo State University finished behind the Lady Buffs with a team total 197 points.  The Buffs finished with 228 team points and came away with first place after the third day of competition. They were in a tight race with the Angelo State Rambelles for first throughout the three days. Day one the Buffs were in second place, day two they tied at 58 team points with the Rambelles before securing first place on the third and final day of the championship.

LUBBOCK — The Buffs ended their season in heartbreaking fashion.

No. 4 seed WT dropped a pair of extra-inning decisions — including a 3-2 loss in 12 innings to fifth-seeded Lubbock Christian as it was swept in a Lone Star Conference Opening Weekend series at Hays Field.

The Chaps jumped out to an early lead in the home half of the second inning as Caden Hensley singled up the middle with two outs to score Jarred Gibson followed by a Carson Ogilvie RBI double to make it 2-0. The Buffs (30-22) found a spark in the bottom of the fifth inning as senior Mike Manetta made a diving stop on a grounder up the middle to end the frame with LCU leading 2-0.

Manetta would lead off the sixth with a walk followed two batters later by a free pass to Adam BeckerWill Fuenning would put the Buffs on the board with an RBI single to left with two outs to make it 2-1. WT would tie up the game in the top of the seventh inning as Manetta lifted an RBI single to center eld with two outs to plate Bryant Bailey to make it 2-2.

The Chaps (33-19) would walk it off for the second straight game in the home half of the 12th as Carson Ogilvie doubled to down the left field line to start the frame followed by a flyout to right as Ogilvie tagged up, the throw struck the runner as he slid into third base and got away just far enough for the junior to score the winning run and end WT's season.

LCU claimed a 13-12, walk-off win in 10 innings on Friday night.

In other LSC action, top-seeded Angelo State swept No. 8 Eastern New Mexico, while second-seeded St. Edward’s downed No. 7 St. Mary’s in two games. No. 3 seed UT Tyler turned back No. 6 Texas A&M-Kingsville in two contests to advance.
