College roundup: St. Lawrence men's hockey gains road victory at Ferris State

Nov. 5—BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — Antonio Venuto scored the deciding goal 3 minutes and 45 seconds into overtime to lift Ferris State to a 2-1 victory over St. Lawrence University in a nonconference men's hockey game at Jim Wink Arena.

With the loss, the Saints had to settle for a split in the weekend series with the Bulldogs.

Philippe Chapleau opened the scoring for St. Lawrence (2-5-1) with a goal 3:28 into the game, with Justin Paul and Cameron Buhl assisting on the tally.

But Trevor Taulien would tie the game with a goal at 11:02 of the period.

Both Ferris State goals were assisted by Stepan Pokorny and Venuto also assisted on the first goal.

Goaltender Ben Kraws stopped 33 of 35 shots faced for the Saints.

Logan Stein made 22 saves to record the win for Ferris State (3-4-1).

ST. LAWRENCE 5, FERRIS STATE 2

Justin Paul provided a goal and two assists and the Saints scored the game's first three goals to gain a nonconference victory at Ferris State on Friday night.

The Saints (2-4-1) gained goals from five players en route to the win. Tomas Mazurka, Felikss Gavars and Drake Burgin each provided a goal and an assist for SLU.

Cameron Buhl scored the first goal for the Saints 1:12 into the game.

Ben Kraws made 25 saves in goal as Ferris State outshot SLU 27-25.

Antonio Venuto and Caiden Gault scored third-period goals for the Bulldogs.

SUNY GENESEO 4, SUNY CANTON 1

Four different players scored a goal each as the Knights (4-0) defeated the Kangaroos in a nonconference game in Geneseo on Saturday.

Goalie Kelson Hooper made 48 saves to back SUNY Canton (0-4).

SUNY MORRISVILLE 5, SUNY POTSDAM 4

Cameron Clark scored a goal and assisted on another to pace the Mustangs (1-2-0, 1-1) past the Bears in a SUNYAC game in Potsdam on Saturday.

Jack Loran and Ryan Mahlmeister each tallied a goal and an assist for SUNY Potsdam (1-2-0, 0-1).

WOMEN'S HOCKEY

ST. LAWRENCE 4, RPI 1

Abby Hustler scored a key goal with 20 seconds left in the second period as St. Lawrence University received scoring from four players for the ECAC Hockey win against Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy.

Sarah Marchand, Julia Gosling and Anna Segedi also scored for the Saints (9-1, 3-0). Mae Batherson and Taylor Lum handed out two assists each. Marchand also added an assist.

The Saints took a 2-0 lead on goals from Marchand and Gosling. RPI (6-4-3, 2-3) cut the lead in half with 3:34 left in the second on a 5-on-3 power-play goal by Maddy Papineau. The Engineers were unable to connect again on the 5-on-3, nor on four minutes of a 5-on-4 that followed, setting up Hustler's shorthanded goal with 18 seconds left in the second.

Segedi added an empty net goal in the third. Emma-Sofie Nordstrom made 22 saves in net for the Saints.

Amanda Rampado saved 21 shots for the Engineers.

CLARKSON 4, UNION 1

Brooke McQuigge, Dominique Petrie and Nicole Gosling all accounted for a goal and an assist and Sara Swiderski scored the game's first goal as Clarkson extended its unbeaten streak with an ECAC Hockey win over Union in Schenectady.

Clarkson (10-0-1, 3-0) pulled away in the third period with a pair of goals and went 2-for-3 on the power play en route to the win. Julia Minotti made 16 saves.

Riley Walsh scored for Union (4-8-1, 1-3-1), which received 31 saves from Sophie Matsoukas.

CLARKSON 5, RPI 1

The unbeaten Golden Knights received a natural hat trick from Sena Catterall and went on to defeat the Engineers in an ECAC Hockey game in Troy on Saturday.

Michelle Pasiechnyk made 19 saves to record the win for Clarkson (11-0-1, 4-0), which swept its weekend trip to the Capital District.

Brooke McQuigge tallied a goal for the Golden Knights and Haley Winn recorded three assists against RPI (6-5-3, 2-4).

ST. LAWRENCE 6, UNION 1

Four second-period goals powered the sixth-ranked Saints to their sixth consecutive victory with an ECAC Hockey win over the Garnet Chargers in Schenectady.

Sarah assisted on five goals to help spark St. Lawrence (10-1-0, 4-0) and Julia Gosling tallied two goals and assisted on two others. Mae Batherson chipped in with two goals and an assist for the Saints.

Goalie Emma-Sofie made 15 saves to record the win for St. Lawrence against Union (4-9-1, 1-4-1), before she was relieved by Kassidy Lawrence (14 saves).

SUNY POTSDAM 2, SUNY CANTON 1

Kaylee Merrill provided a goal and an assist as SUNY Potsdam rallied past SUNY Canton in each team's first State University of New York Athletic Conference game as programs, at Potsdam on Friday.

Potsdam (2-0, 1-0) rallied from a 1-0 deficit after the first period. Merrill delivered the game-tying goal 5:57 into the second period.

Alessia Marandola knocked in her own rebound just 19 seconds into the third to give the Bears the lead. Magalie Parent made 19 saves for Potsdam.

Freshman Isabella Paswaters gave SUNY Canton (2-1, 0-1) the early lead. Molly Lenihan saved 20 shots in goal.

SUNY CANTON 1, SUNY OSWEGO 0

Riley Andzel scored the game winner with 8:39 remaining in regulation, with Sydney Valiquette assisting as the Kangaroos edged the Lakers in a SUNYAC game in Canton on Friday.

Goalie Molly Lenihan made 25 saves to record the shutout for SUNY Canton (3-1, 1-1).

Also on Saturday, SUNY Morrisville defeated SUNY Potsdam, 2-0.

FOOTBALL

ITHACA 51, ST. LAWRENCE 14

Jalen Leonard-Osbourne rushed for a team-high 99 yards and ran for pair of touchdowns to propel the Bombers past the Saints in a Liberty League game at Weeks Field at Leckonby Stadium in Canton.

Quarterback Colin Schumm passed for 151 yards and a touchdown and also ran for a score for Ithaca (8-1, 6-0).

Jalen Hines and Dan Mason each ran for a score for the Bombers.

Jackson Tewksbury ran for a team-high 60 yards and a touchdown to lead St. Lawrence (2-7, 0-5) on its senior day and quarterback Will Lederman threw for 134 yards and a touchdown.

The Saints will wrap up their season when they play at Buffalo State next Saturday in Liberty League play.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

JEFFERSON CC 63, JAMESTOWN CC 41

Daelynn Alcock scored a game-high 18 points and hauled in 11 rebounds as the Cannoneers cruised to victory by winning their season opener on Sunday in Watertown.

Delaney Wiley generated 12 points and also generated five rebounds and five assists for Jefferson Community College.

Bridget Watson tallied a team-high 12 rebounds for the Cannoneers and Abby Raven contributed eight points and eight rebounds.

VOLLEYBALL

SUNY CORTLAND 3, ST. LAWRENCE 1

Lexy Bloss delivered 14 kills and seven blocks and Alexa Guedez added 13 kills as SUNY Cortland gained a 25-18, 25-18, 27-29, 25-17 nonleague victory over St. Lawrence at Burkman Gymnasium in Canton.

Anna Pilkey added nine kills for the Red Dragons (21-3).

Araiza Acum-Santos supplied 17 kills for the Saints (4-20). Vivian Zymeck added 11 kills and three blocks.

ST. LAWRENCE 3, SUNY POTSDAM 1

The Saints wrapped up their regular season with a home victory over the Bears on Saturday, 25-22, 25-13, 23-25, 25-16.

Senior Vivian Zymeck led St. Lawrence (5-20) with 20 kills and 16 digs, scoring a total of 22.5 points over the course of the night. Kori Meissner and Vanessa Latam followed close behind, scoring 15 and 14 digs each.

Junior outside hitter Megan Henry registered eight kills and 12 digs for SUNY Potsdam (6-20) and senior opposite Kendall Jones posted six kills, one service ace, and 12 digs to compliment her teammate.

CLARKSON SPLITS PAIR

The Golden Knights wrapped up their regular season by defeating Nazareth College after losing to SUNY Cortland in a pair of nonconference matches in Potsdam.

After Clarkson was bested by SUNY Cortland, 19-25, 25-19, 25-20 and 25-8, it rallied to defeat Nazareth College, 25-17, 25-20 and 25-10.

Sara Galante totaled 14 kills and 12 digs, Abigail Spector tallied 15 digs and Marin Hangliter added 14 digs for the Golden Knights in the nightcap.

Clarkson (13-11) will host Rochester Institute of Technology in a Liberty League playoff match at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
