College Update: Catching up with Section 4 athletes competing at the next level

We catch up with the goings-on of Section 4 products playing basketball collegiately – including an upcoming matchup of programs greatly boosted by athletes from these parts.

Bree Fargnoli, Chenango Forks/Hartwick College

Hartwick (6-8) is coming off a 63-53 win over Russell Sage in which Fargnoli, a senior, had 10 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals. A look at her numbers for the season (team rank in parentheses):

13.6 points per game (1) … 13 3-point goals (2, one off lead) ... 45 free throws (1) on.763 success rate (1) ... 39 assists (1) ... 21 steals (1).

The Hawks will visit SUNY Cobleskill on Jan. 19.

Brooke Tillotson, Marathon/SUNY-Cortland

The sophomore guard is Cortland’s No. 2 scorer and rebounder with averages of 9.4 and 4.4, respectively, and its co-leader with 18 3-point field goals. She is No. 2 with 37 assists and has a team-leading 33 steals.

Tillotson was a five-season Marathon starter who scored a program-record 1,845 points.

The Red Dragons bring a 10-4 record into their Jan. 19 game at Fredonia.

Evee Coleman, Owego/Binghamton U.

In a 62-51 home loss to Bryant on Jan. 11, the 6-foot junior scored her collegiate high of 21 points on 7-for-13 accuracy from the field (3-for-3 beyond the arc). Her high had been 20 in a mid-Nov. game against Pitt-Johnstown.

Into Thursday’s game at Vermont, Coleman was an every-game starter and had made good on 50 percent of her field goal tries. Her 10.4-point and 3.5-rebound averages ranked No. 2 for the 5-11 Bearcats, who’d lost three in a row.

Taylor Benjamin, Sarah Somers/Alfred State

The Pioneers’ Nos. 1-2 scorers for the season are Somers, a freshman from Whitney Point, and Benjamin, a sophomore from Newark Valley.

Somers makes good on a team-leading 47 percent of her field goal attempts and averages 12.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. Benjamin has been an every-game starter. She averages 11.9 points, 8.7 rebounds and plays 29.8 minutes per game, second-most on the squad.

In a 90-78 loss Wednesday to Penn State Behrend, Benjamin had 26 points (9-for-15 FG), 12 rebounds and six assists – all team highs – and Somers contributed 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists

Alfred State will bring a 3-13 record into its next game, Jan. 20 against La Roche.

Kaety L’Amoreaux, Maine-Endwell/Fairfield U.

The freshman from Endwell has been part of something big at Fairfield, as in, a 12-game win streak that is third-longest in the nation. The 14-1 Stags will visit Marist for a game Jan. 20, and opposing will be the Red Foxes’ Nos. 1-2 scorers Zaria Shazer (15.3) and Kiara Fisher (11.1), both Elmira High graduates.

A starter in 13 of 15 games, L’Amoreaux is among Fairfield’s top three in 3-point field goals (31), scoring (10.6), rebounds (4.3) and steals (23). Her season scoring high of 20 came in a Nov. 10 game against Lipscomb.

Antuan Darden, Binghamton/Corning CC

Into Thursday’s game at Jefferson Community College – the 3-8 Red Barons’ first since Dec. 10 – the 6-6 freshman from Binghamton averaged 8.5 points on a team-leading .479 field goal percentage to go with a team-best 5.5 rebounds.

His season high of 15 points in a Nov. 28 win at Cayuga CC began a four-game stretch over which he averaged 13 points.

Scott Woodring, Waverly/Mansfield U.

Mansfield (6-9) trailed host Shippensburg by 17 at halftime Wednesday before tucking away a 98-87 win in overtime, with Woodring’s eight rebounds the Mounties’ second-best.

Going into that game, the 6-foot-8 junior – a starter in every game – averaged 8.2 points and four rebounds. His season highs of 15 points and nine rebounds came Dec. 2 against Pitt-Johnstown.

Woodring was also a starter in every game first two seasons as a Mountaineer.
