Coldwater uses big third quarter to take lead, holds of Harper Creek for win

COLDWATER – The Coldwater Cardinal boys varsity basketball program got into the win column Tuesday night, defeating Interstate 8 rival Harper Creek by the score of 57-51.

Coldwater opened an early 20-12 lead in the first quarter, only to be outscored by the Beavers 17-9 in the second quarter to knot things up at 29-29 heading into the half.

Coldwater retook control with a big third quarter, outscoring Harper Creek 14-5, building a 43-34 lead heading to the fourth.

Harper Creek did not go away easy, but it was Coldwater who took the win in the end by the score of 57-51.

Ayden Dirschell led the Cardinal scoring with 15 points to go along with eight rebounds and six assists. Gavin Taylor and Zach Coffing both hit double figures, with Taylor pouring in 14 while Coffing added 11. Coffing added eight rebounds and four steals while Taylor chipped in five rebounds.

Niko Downs also added a solid game with eight points, five rebounds and four assists.

Coldwater improves to 4-9 overall and 3-2 in the Interstate 8. The Cardinals will return to action Saturday when they travel to Pennfield for a scheduled make-up game with the Panthers, with game time scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

In JV action it was Coldwater taking out Harper Creek 68-56.

The JV Cardinals were led on the night by Dayton Ennis with 20 points while Julian Thompson added 16 points. Also hitting double figures was Jakyi Brown Abston with 13 points while adding six rebounds and two steals.
