Cold-shooting Americas falls in bi-district to Midland Legacy

The oldest rule of basketball is that the game is kinder to the team that makes shots.

At the bitterest of ends after a great season, that team was not Americas in its Tuesday Class 6A boys bi-district game with Midland Legacy.

Americas made 5-of-26 shots in an 18-point second half, sending it on its way to a 59-44 loss as the District 1-6A champions ended its season 29-5.

The TrailBlazers struggled with Legacy's pressure defense and also missed shots they made in much of their fantastic regular season.

Ultimately, the Rebels had a lot to do with that.

Quoting the coach

"I'm very proud of our effort defensively," Legacy coach Chris Suttle said. "We knew coming out here it would be a tough, tough challenge against a very good, very well coached Americas team.

"I'm just really proud of our kids and their effort tonight."

How it happened

Legacy scored the game's first five points and put up 11 points on its first five possessions, building a lead it would never relinquish.

Highlights for Americas came when it got 3-point buzzer beaters at the end of the first and second quarters respectively from Mario Holguin and Aiden Marquez, respectively, and the Blazers managed to get into halftime down 32-26 despite 9-of-22 shooting.

Then in a two-point third quarter they made 1-of-13 shots, including 0-of-6 from 3-point range and they lost contact.

Marquez led Americas with 13 points and Vinnie Vicencio added nine. For Legacy, the fourth place team from District 2-6A who improved to 15-16, Diego Rodriguez led with 17 points.
