Cocoa Beach Karate will be hosting two free community service self-defense seminars.

The first will be held Friday, Aug. 25, at 5:30 p.m. at Cocoa Beach Health and Fitness, 1355 North Atlantic Avenue.

The second will be held Saturday, Sept. 16, from 2-3 p.m. as part of Space Coast Women's Day. The event is located at Merritt Square Mall, 777 E. Merritt Island Causeway.

Participants will learn the basics of spatial awareness, assault prevention and practical techniques for basic self-defense.

"We teach assault prevention strategies as well as basic self-defense tactics. It’s better to know how to defend yourself and never have to use it rather than have to employ self defense and not know how," said Sensei Des Chaskelson, owner and chief instructor at Cocoa Beach Karate. “We have been conducting these free community service self-defense events since 2002 here on the Space Coast."
