Clinton tennis improves to 6-0 on the season after sweep over Davenport North

Apr. 18—CLINTON — The Clinton River Queen tennis team is off to a hot start this season after improving to 6-0 on Thursday evening.

Clinton welcomed the Davenport North Wildcats in a Mississippi Athletic Conference matchup indoors at the River Cities Tennis & Pickleball Complex.

The Queens dominated singles play. In fact, they did not give up a single game to the Wildcats. Sescie Haan set the pace early with an 8-0 win over Aarison Barnett at the number one position.

Clinton's Maddie Rowden and Nora Brown also took care of business in the early matches, defeating Kaylee McCreery and Avery Hirsch respectively, 8-0.

Elizabeth Grinnall, Katie Atkinson and Lou Gonzalez were the next to take the floor and they were just as swift, picking up three more points with 8-0 victories.

"It was nice to see the varsity kids work on certain skills and hold them to zero games given away," Clinton head coach Cindy Rasche said.

The overall team match was already won by the Queens heading into doubles but they did not slow down.

Haan and Rowden as well as Grinnall and Atkinson both picked up 8-0 victories in doubles play. Gonzalez and freshman Sammy Manikowski won the final match of the day for Clinton 8-1.

The Queens ended the day with a 9-0 sweep of the Wildcats and will host their 10 team invitational on Saturday which will include may top teams in the state including local schools Camanche and Central DeWitt.
