Cleveland Browns trade Baker Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers

Baker Mayfield is no longer a member of the Cleveland Browns. On Wednesday, the Browns shipped out the former Heisman Trophy winner to the Carolina Panthers for a 2024 5th round pick according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Peliserro.

The Browns and Panthers will split Baker’s salary for this season. Cleveland will pay $10.5 million while Carolina will pick up about $5 million according to Ari Meirov. Mayfield took a paycut to help make this trade happen.

As if this trade needed anything to sweeten it, the Browns and Panthers will play each other in week one.

It’s best for all parties that this trade got done before training camp. The Panthers get their bridge QB for Matt Corral, the Browns eject a huge distraction from their locker room, and Baker Mayfield gets a fresh start in a new city. That is a win-win-win.

Mayfield will be competing with Sam Darnold and Corrall for the starting quarterback job when training camp begins.

Getting traded with plenty of time before camp was the ideal scenario for Mayfield. Now he gets to learn the playbook and get acquainted with his new surroundings before having to get back to work.

Mayfield requested a trade back in the spring after the Cleveland Browns traded for Deshaun Watson.
