CLASSIC DAY 2: Braves. Wolves move impressively to semifinals

Dec. 27—Terre Haute South and Parke Heritage moved into the First Financial Wabash Valley Classic semifinals with a pair of outstanding high school basketball performances Wednesday at Terre Haute South.

In a pair of quarterfinal games that were expected to go down to the wire, South beat Sullivan 63-38 — it was a three-point game when they met a month ago — and Parke Heritage emerged from a battle of Class 2A powers with a 56-36 win over Linton (revenge for last year's semistate loss, perhaps). In two evening consolation-bracket games, Casey beat Shakamak 51-41 and Greencastle topped Cloverdale 60-47.

Zay Baker, whose offensive efficiency so far has been a big key to South's two wins, scored the last six points of the first quarter — a 3-point basket and a three-point play from an offensive rebound — to stretch the Braves' lead from 9-8 to 15-8.

Sullivan got within 16-11, but then South went on a 15-2 run — two 3-pointers by Peyton Turner making it 22-11.

Then, after Javyn Woodard scored for the Golden Arrows, a string of baskets by Chris Herrin, Jaylen Wells, Josh Morgan (a 3-pointer) and a spectacular drive and layup by Baker. Although the Arrows got back-to-back steals and layups by Woodard and Carson Granby, a 3-pointer by Morgan closed out the half with South leading 34-17.

The Braves build a 20-point lead midway through the third quarter. Sullivan's last gasp was an 8-0 run that brought the Arrows within 47-35, but they scored just three more points the rest of the way.

"Give Terre Haute South the credit," coach Jeff Moore of Sullivan said after the game. "They were more physical and we didn't like it. We could not keep their guards from getting to the basket and it either led to layups or wide-open 3s.

"I'm very disappointed. We completely lost our composure both offensively and defensively."

Baker needed just nine shots for a game-high 17 points for the Braves, while Morgan scored 14 and four other Braves scored at least five. Sullivan had no double-figure scorers, with Aidan McCammon leading the way with nine points.

"Great team win today," coach Maynard Lewis said. "I thought everyone played hard and played within their roles. We did a good job on defense and offense. It was good to see everybody working together.

In other midday Classic games Wednesday:

—Parke Heritage 56, Linton 36 — The other early quarterfinal game started like the Classic classic that many fans expected, with eight lead changes in the first quarter that ended with a Treigh Schelsky basket that put the Wolves ahead 12-11.

Then the Miners got cold and Max Dowd got hot.

Linton scored just four points in the second quarter, while the Wolves' Dowd hit a trio of 3-pointers. The last two of those gave Parke Heritage a 23-13 lead before Linton got the last basket of the first half.

Conner Daily got a 3-pointer, a basket and assisted on three of Linton's other four buckets in the third period, but the Miners couldn't gain much ground. They were within 34-27, but then the Wolves went on an 11-0 run.

Dowd had a game-high 15 points, Schelsky scored 14 and the other three Parke Heritage starters combined for 25 more points. Daily had 11 points for Linton and Paul Oliver scored nine with a game-high 14 rebounds — meaning, in a game with just 48 missed shots, he got almost 30% of the misses.

—Casey 51, Shakamak 41 — The Lakers went cold in the fourth quarter Tuesday night, costing them a chance to beat Edgewood, and were even colder in the first half against the Warriors.

Even so, Shakamak was within 18-17 late in the second quarter before Casey got the last five points of the first half including a banked-in 3-pointer at the buzzer by Connor Sullivan.

The Lakers heated up early in the third quarter with a 12-2 run for a 29-25 lead, only to have Casey go on a 15-0 run — the last eight points in the third quarter, capped by back-to-back 3-pointers by Ryan Richards, and the first seven points of the fourth quarter including Richards' third straight trey.

A driving layup by Jaden Johnson got the Lakers within 40-34, a 3-pointer by Johnson made it 44-37 and a basket by Johnson cut it to 46-39 before the Warriors hit five of six free throws.

Richards and Cole Gilbert had 16 points each for Casey, while Grant Cochonour grabbed 11 rebounds and Nolan Clement had seven assists.

Johnson, the smallest player on the court, led all scorers with 18 points for Shakamak while usual leading scorer J.T. May had 13 points and 11 rebounds despite an uncharacteristic shooting night.

—Greencastle 60, Cloverdale 47 — The Clovers were not really at full strength to start the game, with at least one regular fighting off injuries, and had two of their starters helped off the floor in the first quarter.

But junior reserve Levi Johnson took advantage of extra playing time for a big night as the Clovers, who lost to the Tiger Cubs by 26 points in November, hung in there.

There were five lead changes in the first quarter, but a 9-0 Greencastle run gave the Cubs the lead for good. Cloverdale got the last eight points of the third quarter to pull within 45-38, but Greencastle got the first six of the final period.

Sam Gooch had 13 points and 11 rebounds, Cody Evans also scored 13 and Nathan Sutherlin added 10 for Greencastle — all three are sophomores, incidentally — while Johnson scored a game-high 17 for Cloverdale. Houston Jobe, one of the two players carried off in the first quarter, returned for the second half and finished with 10 points — before being helped off again in the fourth period.
