All 'A' Classic: Doerr leads Evangel Christian basketball to win; Collegiate falls

Christian Doerr’s big game lifted the Evangel Christian boys basketball team to victory in its All “A” Classic opener Thursday.

Doerr posted 19 points, eight rebounds, five steals and four assists as the Eagles beat Murray 65-43 at Eastern Kentucky University’s McBrayer Arena in Richmond.

Kyran Tilley added 15 points, six assists, five rebounds and four assists for Evangel (17-3), which will face the Harlan-Martin County winner in Friday’s 5 p.m. quarterfinal. Cyr Malonga pitched in 11 points, nine rebounds and five blocks, and Gianni Davis had 10 points and three steals.

Evangel posted significant advantages in points in the paint (38-20), points off turnovers (25-5) and fast-break points (20-0). The Eagles shot 52.9% (27 of 51).

Kobe Watson scored 13 points to lead Murray (12-8).

The Rebels (15-6) closed the game with a 10-3 run to pull away from the Titans (10-8).

Willis MacGregor’s 3-pointer gave Collegiate a 34-32 lead with 5:11 remaining, but the Rebels scored the next eight points. Brax Ward’s layup gave Owen County a 40-34 lead with 1:45 left.

Western Kentucky University signee Teagan Moore had 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists to lead Owen County, which will face Washington County in Friday’s 6:30 p.m. quarterfinal. Ward added 12 points and six rebounds.

MacGregor was 4 for 9 from 3-point range and scored 12 points to lead Collegiate, which shot just 33.3% (14 for 42). Owen County shot 53.8% (14 for 26).
