Cincinnati Reds top hitting prospect Edwin Arroyo to have season-ending shoulder surgery
So much for all that Cincinnati Reds infield depth. So much for all those shortstops.
Top hitting prospect Edwin Arroyo, considered by many the best shortstop in the organization, is to undergo season-ending surgery to repair a left torn labrum, the team said late Wednesday.
The news comes on the same day the Reds determined Matt McLain — the starting second baseman and backup to shortstop Elly De La Cruz — would open on the injured list as he plots a treatment plan with doctors for his own left shoulder injury.

The Reds' other would-be backup at short, Noelvi Marte, was suspended earlier this spring for the first 80 games of the season after testing positive for steroids.
Arroyo, 20, was to open the season at Double-A Chattanooga with a chance to make a big-league debut this season.
He was making a strong impression in his first big-league camp this spring until he suffered the injury March 13 against the San Francisco Giants, diving back to the first-base bag on a pickoff.
Arroyo is MLB Pipeline’s 67th-ranked prospect in baseball this year.
He was 6-for-17 (.353) this spring with two doubles, three walks and two strikeouts.
Down to Spencer Steer as De La Cruz’s backup, the Reds on Wednesday traded for infielder Santiago Espinal, sending pitching prospect Chris McElvain to the Blue Jays for the 2022 All-Star.
