Cincinnati Reds reliever Sam Moll optioned to Louisville; Frankie Montas to be activated

Cincinnati Reds reliever Sam Moll, who hasn't allowed a run in five appearances this season, was optioned to Triple-A Louisville after Sunday's loss to the Baltimore Orioles, presumably to make room on the 26-man roster for Frankie Montas' return from the injured list.

The Reds say they'll make the corresponding move before Tuesday's series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Montas already has been announced as the starter for that game, necessitating the roster spot. Montas missed the last two weeks on the IL with a bruised forearm after getting hit by a line drive.

Moll, the left-hander who excelled after being acquired in a deadline trade from Oakland last summer, opened the season on the IL after dealing with a slower ramp-up process over the spring because of shoulder soreness experienced during off-season throwing.

Since making his season debut April 23, he has struck out four, walked one and allowed three hits in five innings pitched.

Moll was one of three left-handers in the Reds' bullpen (also Brent Suter and Justin Wilson). And they have two in the rotation.
