Cincinnati Bearcats drop Victory Bell game to Miami | Replay

In Corryville and Clifton, a celebratory bell could be heard late Saturday night emanating from the lights of Nippert Stadium. The only thing was, it was the opposing team celebrating.

In overtime, Miami beat the University of Cincinnati 31-24 as Yahsyn McKee intercepted Emory Jones in the end zone to end the contest. Miami had scored the go-ahead touchdown on an 8-yard pass from Brett Gabbert to Joe Wilkins Jr.Miami's McKee sent the game to overtime by blocking a would-be game-winning field goal by UC's Carter Brown.

The RedHawks now tie the series with the Bearcats 60-60-7. It's their first win over UC since 2005.

On a sold-out "Nipp at Night" at the University of Cincinnati, Coach Scott Satterfield's Bearcats got all they wanted from their nearby rivals in Oxford. On the first play from scrimmage, Miami University punched UC in the mouth with a 79-yard touchdown from Brett Gabbert to speedster Gage Larvadain.

They would trail 10-7 after a quarter, but rallied with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Gabbert to Javon Stacy to take a lead on UC at halftime.

Much of the evening, the Bearcats were getting to the red zone, but settling on field goals. UC led 16-14 in the third quarter and again 24-21 in the fourth. Miami's Graham Nicholson tied the game at 24 with a 20-yard field goal.

Again UC had a chance to win in regulation but Brown's field goal was blocked by McKee. Out of three overtime Victory Bell games, it was Miami's first win. UC had won in overtime contests in 1996 and 1997.

The RedHawks have a seven-play, 88-yard drive lasting 3:09 and helped by a pair of pass-interference penalties. Taj Ward stops a would-be score and Miami is held to a 20-yard Graham Nicholson field goal. 5:10 left.

The Bearcats go 11 plays for 75 yards in 4:09 with Emory Jones scampering right for 17 yards and reaching the ball over the pylon for the score. UC goes for the 2-point conversion and Jones finds Chamon Metayer in the end zone. There's 13:52 left in the game. The touchdown was scored in the student section end zone.

UC was able to pick up some running yards on the drive as Ryan Montgomery now leads with 71. However, Emory Jones is 0-for-6 passing to start the half. Miami bows up near the end zone again and UC settles for a 23-yard field goal from Brown, his third of the game.

Emory Jones is 13-for-19 passing for 180 yards and is also UC's top rusher with 28 yards. UC's outgained Miami 259-183 but trails by a point. Miami's Brett Gabbert is 6-for-10 for 123 yards for two touchdowns. One was to Gage Larvadain on the first play from scrimmage, a 79-yard strike. The other was 17 yards to Javon Tracy.

After Emory Jones misses Dee Wiggins deep, he's intercepted by Corban Hondru putting the RedHawks in scoring position again. But Miami fumbles (forced by Taj Ward) with Deshawn Pace with the recovery. Nothing going for UC offensively and they're down one at halftime. UC gets the ball to start the second half.

UC goes 16 plays and 79 yards in 7:23 but again must settle for a field goal from 23 yards by Carter Brown. Neither team is running the ball particularly well. UC's Xzavier Henderson had nine catches for 105 yards.

The RedHawks went 12 plays, 69 yards in 7:12 with Gabbert hitting Javon Tracy on a 17-yard pass for the lead. The scoring play came on 3rd-and-12 and Miami also converted a 4th-and-5 at midfield to extend the drive.

UC outgained the RedHawks 152-107 and outpassed them 101-92. UC leads in rushing 51-15.

UC sputters again on a drive in the red zone and must settle for a 28-yard field goal by Carter Brown. Emory Jones 7-for-9 for 101 yards thus far. Ryan Montgomery leads the ground game with 20 yards.

There was a timeout so I had time to load the picture of 6-11 basketball recruit Malachi Moreno I took before the game. Bearcats with the ball currently on their own 37-yard line. Moreno is a junior by the way.

Bryon Threats picks off Brett Gabbert and takes it to the 8-yard line. Miami holds them on four straight rushes. Bearcats come away empty-handed.

The Bearcats go 75 yards in six plays in 2:58 with Corey Kiner scoring from the 4-yard-line. Carter Brown's extra point good. We're all knotted up at 7. Perhaps, they'll keep an eye on Larvadain now?

After a week where UC said they needed to stop No. 10 Gage Larvadain, the junior toasts the Bearcats on the first play. It's Brett Gabbert to Larvadain over the top for 79 yards.

Sammy Anderson warmed up before the game but I'm told he will not play for the Bearcats.

Basketball-wise 6-11, 210-pound current junior center Malachi Moreno from Great Crossing High School in Georgetown, Kentucky is in attendance. Moreno is a 247Sports four-star recruit.

Pregame news

The big story prior to the game involves next week when the Oklahoma Sooners hit town. Fox Sports will bring their Big Noon Kickoff Show prior to the contest with the festivities starting at 10 a.m. The event will occur at the Tangeman University Center Commons open area where ESPN's "College GameDay" emanated from in 2021.

Among the cast of the Big Noon Kickoff Show is former University of Cincinnati defensive back Urban Meyer who later was head coach at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and Ohio State.

The University of Cincinnati has played night football games at Nippert Stadium for 100 years. The latest is tonight's 127th Battle for the Victory Bell between the Bearcats and Miami University. With last year's victory at Paycor Stadium, UC went over .500 in the series at 60-59-7.

UC has won 33 of their last 34 home games and has won nine straight "Nipp at Night" games. They haven't lost a Nippert night game since 2017, nor an away night game since falling at UCF in 2018. In the series with the RedHawks, the Bearcats have won 16 straight with the last loss coming in a 2005 midweek game in Oxford at Yager Stadium.

The Bearcats found themselves down 17-7 in the first half last year before running off 31 unanswered points to secure the bell yet again.
