Dr. Chris Nowinski cringed along with fans as San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy held his head after being tackled by Cincinnati Bengals defensive linemen DJ Reader and Trey Hendrickson while throwing a pass late in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 31-17 loss to the Bengals at Levi's Stadium.

Reader and Hendrickson hit Purdy low, but Purdy appeared to hit his head as he fell. Purdy's pass was intercepted by Dax Hill, but a roughing-the-passer penalty was called. Purdy fumbled as he was sacked on the following play, sealing the Bengals' win.

Nowinski, a former college football player and professional wrestler who founded the Concussion Legacy Foundation, made it known before the game that he didn't think Purdy should be playing against Cincinnati having reported symptoms just days after suffering a diagnosed concussion.

Nowinski blasted the Niners after the game, calling it a "terrible idea" to play Purdy six days after a concussion:

The 49ers had listed Purdy as questionable, but Purdy cleared concussion protocol Saturday and had no injury designation against the Bengals.
