Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes clears up comments on Chargers QB Justin Herbert

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has been making headlines for responding to a Los Angeles Chargers fan who was heckling him at the American Century Championship. The fan evoked Chargers QB Justin Herbert, telling Mahomes to “watch out” for the second-year quarterback.

“I’ll see it when I believe it,” Mahomes said

Obviously, Mahomes was going for the phrase, “I’ll believe it when I see it.” That’ll happen after a few Coors Lights on the golf course on a hot summer day.

Here’s the video from the broadcast captured by Fox 4 Kansas City reporter Rob Collins:

Mahomes sought to clarify some of his comments in a recent interview with USA TODAY Sports.

“Yeah, I think it got taken out of context,” Mahomes told USA TODAY Sports’ Jori Epstein. “I was talking some trash to all those Raiders and Broncos and Chargers fans out there. I have a ton of respect for him as a player.”

And Mahomes is right, the comment was absolutely taken out of context. Partially because the NBC broadcast makes the heckling from the fan look a bit more innocent than it truly was. Here’s the video that was taken by the classless fan who heckled Mahomes:

“Hey, you’re a bum,” the heckler said to Mahomes. “Watch out for Justin Herbert next year.”

So, yeah, the comments made to Mahomes were a little less innocent than it has been portrayed on social media and in the media. However, Mahomes took the class route and clarified his stance on the second-year signal-caller for Los Angeles anyway.

“For him to come out in Year 1 and play at that level is a special thing,” Mahomes said. “Not a lot of guys can do it. And I know I’ll have a lot of tough games against him in the future. So it was kind of a joking matter that I think blew up on Twitter like most things to do.”

“I have a ton of respect for him,” Mahomes said of Herbert, “as a guy and a player.”
