Must-have pick – Sergio Aguero

Let’s be brutally honest, it’s been extremely hard to ignore the Argentina international as a fantasy football mainstay since 2011. Aged 29, he’s still arguably at the peak of his powers. Manchester City managers have changed, as have teammates in the last six years. Yet there’s always been one consistent truth – Sergio Aguero scores goals.

Of course, serious questions about his future game time were asked following the arrival of Gabriel Jesus and Pep Guardiola’s habit of tinkering. And yes, for one reason or another he has failed to appear in 35 Premier League games for Man City over the previous four seasons.

That’s all irrelevant now as he’s fit, starting and scoring goals in a Man City team that has been averaging 3.2 goals per game in the Premier League since August. As a point of note, Aguero is only a brace away from Man City’s all-time goal scoring record. There’s no doubt that this will whet his appetite against a Crystal Palace team in free fall.

Comeback pick – Alexis Sanchez

He ended last season superbly, with rich returns in the final three gameweeks. However, his efforts were all in vain as Arsenal finished 5th. Subsequent to that, below par performances in the Confederations Cup and an apparent failure to secure a move away from North London haven’t exactly put him in good stead.

The fact is, Sanchez has failed to score or assist in the Premier League this season. That said he’s only played 96 minutes to date. This should hopefully change in a slow-starting Arsenal team that is craving for his magic touch. With news of Danny Welbeck’s injury confirmed, an opportunity has arisen for him to fill the void. He’s had enough time to regain his match fitness and featured against Doncaster in midweek, assisting Walcott for the game’s only goal. For his high standards and with the laws of probability at stake, he’s due something big soon. Perhaps West Brom at the Emirates on a Monday night is just what’s needed for Sanchez to finally start and get off the mark.

Differential pick – Matt Ritchie

Despite a lacklustre summer, the Toon Army have gone under the radar at this early stage of the season. Three wins has been sufficient for them to currently occupy fourth spot. This is in large part due to the exploits of Matt Ritchie. Although he hasn’t scored, his four assists have been crucial in Newcastle United’s Premier League wins, even if it hasn’t been against the likes of Man City or Chelsea. This sort of form could be a sign of things to come for the rest of the season provided that they can maintain this rhythm at home and away. Of course, Benitez has been known to rotate his players, but it’s unlikely that Ritchie will face random spells on the bench anytime soon. Finally, he has also been known to take free kicks, corners and penalties. What more could you ask for in a non-premium midfielder?
