Chiefs clarify how players will be used in stadium sales tax ads

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — On Monday, the Kansas City Chiefs put out a post on X, formerly Twitter, trying to get people to vote “yes” on Jackson County Question 1.

“We need you to vote Yes on Question 1,” Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. said.

The ad only lasts 15 seconds.

“There’s no better place in the world to play than Arrowhead Stadium. Lets keep it that way,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Kelce are heard saying.

Chiefs new lease at Arrowhead would be for minimum of 25 years

Last Wednesday during the Chiefs renovation announcement, President Mark Donovan was asked if players would help drive the vote.

“You know we have shied away from putting them in that position,” he responded. “We’ll use them in our placards. We’ll use them as part of the campaign, but personally speaking, and doing interviews and things like that, we don’t plan on that right now.”

“We’ve had a couple reach out to me saying, ‘How can I help?'” he continued. “So we may take advantage of some of that.”

Donovan didn’t specify which players had reached out, but right after he made the above remarks, another reporter asked a follow up.

“Yeah, so I think you’ll see Patrick in spots, but I don’t think you’re going to see Patrick doing a scripted spot, no,” Donovan replied, when asked if voters should expect to see Mahomes doing a spot encouraging people to vote in favor of the stadium question.

A team response Tuesday said that Monday’s ad was a whole bunch of players from both the Royals and the Chiefs doing just a few lines.

When Donovan was talking about a scripted spot Wednesday, he was talking about a full 30-second spot with a production crew and just one player like Mahomes.

The Chiefs are firm on their stance that they don’t plan to have their players do those types of spots, but you may see more one-line messages from players like Mahomes and Kelce up until April 2.

Jackson County early voting with an excuse has already started. On Tuesday, March 19, you’ll be able to advance vote in person without an excuse if you don’t want to wait until election day.
