Lorenz Assignon was sent off just before half time for a second yellow card and also gave away a penalty kick in a hugely controversial moment which also led to Burnley manager Vincent Kompany being sent off and assistant coach Craig Bellamy was on the sidelines for the rest of the game.

Cole Palmer scored the penalty, and finished calmly in the second half, but Burnley twice equalized as Josh Cullen volleyed home brilliantly and Dara O'Shea's late header sealed an unexpected point.

With the point Burnley move on to 18 as they sit four points from safety. Chelsea lost more ground in the race for Europe as they remain on 40 points.

Chelsea vs Burnley live updates! - By Joe Prince-Wright

Full time: Chelsea 2-2 Burnley

What a resolute display from Burnley as they held on for a point but Mauricio Pochettino's side were well short of the levels they expect.

Sterling should make it 3-2 as he heads wide

Oh Raheem. Cole Palmer crosses and puts it on a plate for Sterling but he somehow heads wide. He cannot believe it. Six yards out and sends his free header wide.

No way, Burnley equalize through O’Shea’s header! - Chelsea 2-2 Burnley (81st minute)

Unreal. It looked like their hopes of grabbing a point were over but Burnley get a corner and Dara O'Shea's flicked header somehow beats Petrovic and goes in. The Chelsea goalkeeper should keep that out. Burnley fans in dreamland.

Palmer finishes after Sterling’s superb flick - Chelsea 2-1 Burnley (78th minute)

Substitute Raheem Sterling with a sensational flick plays in Palmer and he's in the box and guess what? He slots home calmly. Palmer to the rescue for Chelsea once again this season. 10-man Burnley have been brave and have hung in there. Stamford Bridge is very relieved.

Chelsea are struggling to create anything

This has been a really poor second half from Chelsea. A few half chances but Burnley have looked the more likely to score. 20 minutes to go.

Nearly a second for Burnley

How has that stayed out? Foster sees his effort saved by Petrovic from close range, then another is blocked. So close for Burnley.

What a goal from Cullen! - Chelsea 1-1 Burnley (47th minute)

What a goal from Josh Cullen! 10-man Burnley equalize and you know what? They deserve it. Burnley have created so many chances and Cullen plays a lovely one two and volleys home majestically. Wow. Chelsea are stunned. Kompany will be so proud of his side from wherever he's sitting in Stamford Bridge.

Half time: Chelsea 1-0 Burnley

The key moment came before the break as Assignon was sent off and Palmer dinked home the penalty kick. Before that it was an end-to-end game. Vincent Kompany was sent off as he was so unhappy with that Assignon second yellow card and penalty kick decision and unless the Clarets can launch an unlikely comeback they will be eight points from safety with eight games to go.

Penalty and red card! Assignon sent off for dragging back Mudryk and Cole Palmer dinks home the spot kick, plus Kompany is also sent off - Chelsea 1-0 Burnley (44th minute)

Mudryk gets behind Assignon and Burnley's right back grabs at him and he goes down. A penalty kick is awarded and Assignon is shown a second yellow card and is sent off. Vincent Kompany is livid and is shown a red card too. It was a pull on Mudryk by Assignon but there was very little contact. You can understand why Kompany was incensed. Cole Palmer had to wait a long time to take the penalty kick but he is so composed as he dinks home the penalty kick Panenka style down the middle. Cool as a cucumber.

Burnley go close again

Larsen heads wide from close range and he should hit the target. That is a big chance. This is really entertaining. Burnley aren't just sitting in.

Jackson does really well but Mudryk’s weak effort saved

Nicolas Jackson surges down the right and cuts inside before setting up Mudryk nicely, but the Ukrainian winger sends a tame effort straight at Muric.

Disasi bundles home from close range... but VAR rules it out for handball

A corner is played short and Mudryk whips in a cross to the back post which misses everyone, then Disasi bundles the ball home. But VAR is having a close look at this and Disasi put the ball in with his arm. It was just under the shoulder line so VAR says it is handball. The goal is chalked off and Chelsea do not lead. 20 minutes gone.

Chelsea piling on the pressure

How are the Blues not ahead? First Cole Palmer has a shot on goal which is wonderfully blocked, then Muric denies Jackson with a telescopic leg. Burnley's goalkeeper is in for a very busy afternoon in west London...

So close for Burnley as Petrovic denies Odobert

Okay, Burnley. Odobert is played in down the left and cuts inside on his right and his curling effort is going in but Petrovic makes a fine save.

Enzo Fernandez close to an opener!

A fluid Chelsea move sees the ball played to Fernandez on the edge of the box and his shot deflects and loops up towards the top corner but Muric tips it onto the post. Good start from the hosts.
