Check out how Nevada, Roland-Story, Gilbert and Ballard wrestlers did in state tournament consolations

DES MOINES — There were a total of six boys high school wrestlers in Class 2A from the Ames area who made their way through the consolation rounds to earn a spot on the medal stand during the Iowa high school boys state wrestling tournament.

Four wrestlers from Ballard placed third through sixth in their respective weight classes, Nevada produced one wrestler who placed third and Roland-Story had a wrestler come in fifth.

Two other wrestlers from Roland-Story and one from Nevada picked up at least one win during the state tournament.

Here is what we learned from how area wrestlers performed in the consolation rounds at the 2024 Iowa boys state wrestling tournament.

Ballard's Brody Sampson places third, Easton Enyeart fourth

Four members of the Ballard wrestling team placed and Nevada had one wrestler earn a spot on the medal stand in 2A.

Ballard's Brody Sampson placed third at 190.

Sampson pinned Mount Vernon's Caseyn Curran in the second round and then he lost by a 10-6 decision to Decorah's Thomas Sexton in the quarterfinals. Sampson rebounded to pin Williamsburg's Bryan Riedel in the consolation third round and Dike-New Hartford's Zach Adelmund in the consolation fourth round.

In the consolation semifinals Sampson edged Perry's Kain Killmer by a 3-2 decision. That set up a rematch with Sexton in the third-place match, and Sampson got his revenge with a 7-3 victory.

"It felt good, but I just wish it was in the finals," said Sampson. "I would have rather had first, but you take what you can get."

Easton Enyeart placed fourth for Ballard at 106.

Enyeart pinned Davis County's Tucker Ball in the second round, defeated Atlantic's Taye Jordan by a 9-2 decision in the quarterfinals and lost by a 3-0 decision to No. 1 Klayten Perreault of Mount Vernon in the semifinals. Enyeart bounced back to defeat Union's Coy Mehlert by major decision, 9-0, in the consolation semifinals.

In the third-place match, Enyeart suffered a close 5-3 loss to Nevada's Urijah Courter to end his freshman season at 40-6.

Henry Christensen and Tucker Vitzthum both came in sixth for Ballard.

Christensen wrestled at 215.

He defeated Clarion-Goldfield-Dows' Ashtin Willms by a 6-3 decision and Davenport Assumption's Rhett Schaefer by a 3-2 decision before falling to New Hampton/Turkey Valley's Braden McShane by a 3-2 score in the semifinals. In the consolation semifinals, Christensen suffered a 3-2 loss by ultimate tiebreaker to Clarinda's Karson Downey.

Christensen lost the fifth-place match to Glenwood's Mason Koehler by a 5-0 decision to end the season at 39-10.

Vitzthum competed at 150.

Vitzthum (39-10) defeated North Polk's Cole Halupnick by a 9-3 decision and lost by a 3-0 decision to Union's Caleb Olson during the second round and quarterfinals. In the consolations, Vitzthum edged Carroll's Cooper Ludwig by a 7-6 decision and he scored a 7-2 win over Williamsburg's Nile Sinn before suffering a 3-1 loss by sudden victory to Anamosa's Hudson Scranton.

Vitzthum lost the fifth-place match to Algona's Tate Slagle by a 6-2 decision.

Ballard's Daniel Hyman went 0-2 at 157 in 2A. Hyman lost by an 8-5 decision to Carroll's Owen Klocke in the first round and a 7-6 decision to Grinnell's Maxwell Mintle in the consolation second round to finish 22-14.

Urijah Courter wins bronze at 106 for Nevada

Nevada's Urijah Courter won a bronze medal in his first appearance at the state wrestling tournament.

The freshman's victory over Enyeart in the third-place match at 106 capped a 4-1 state tournament run for Courter, who ended the season with an impressive 40-2 record.

Courter pinned Glenwood's Brody Black and edged Burlington Notre Dame's Colt Boyles by a 5-3 decision during the championship second round and quarterfinals, respectively. After losing to Fairfield's Cael McCabe by an 8-3 decision in the semifinals, Courter pinned Decorah's Gavin Knutson in the consolation semifinals and then got revenge on Enyeart for an early loss.

"It felt really good because I wrestled him preseason and he beat me, 9-5," said Courter. "It felt really good to get that revenge win back."

To build on this momentum in the offseason, Courter said he plans on adding a little more muscle.

"I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing and hit the weights pretty hard," Courter said. "Maybe get 175 on the bench. But I hate deadlift."

Nevada's Kadyn Weber ended his successful career by going 29-4 at 120 as a senior.

Weber, a two-time state placewinner, defeated Eagle Grove's Mack Morgan by a 10-4 decision in the consolation second round. He suffered an 8-2 loss to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont's Gage Spurgeon in the quarterfinals and a tough 8-7 loss to Union's Kaydin Jones in the consolation fourth round.

Gilbert sophomore Tayshawn Gillen also competed in 2A. Gillen suffered a tough 7-6 loss by tiebreaker to Albia's Lance Helm in the championship first round and a loss by fall to Anamosa's Ayden Antonelli in the consolation second round to finish his sophomore season at 19-13.

Logan Powers places fifth at 165 in 2A for Roland-Story

Powers entered the tournament seeded 14th at 165, but he left with a medal.

Powers pinned South Tama County's Cyrus Mathes in the first round, and he earned an exciting 11-9 victory over No. 3 seed Brent Dennhardt of Greene County in the second round. In the quarterfinals, Powers pinned Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley's Brock Mulder and he lost by a 9-1 decision to Dubuque Wahlert's Colin Young in the semifinals.

In the consolation semifinals, Powers was dealt a tough 4-3 loss by Benton Community's Brenden Heying. Powers wrapped up the tournament by pinning Osage's Max Gast in the fifth-place match to finish 32-5.

"It feels good," said Powers. "I'm kind of disappointed in the semis and con-semis losses, but I put all the effort I could into it. It felt good to be overlooked."

Roland-Story freshman Caiden Latch and senior Aaron Peyton both went 1-2 during the tournament.

Latch finished 27-7 at 113. He scored an 11-10 victory over Estherville Lincoln Central's Ayden Antonelli in the championship second round, suffered a 10-0 loss by major decision to Webster City's Linden Phetxoumphone in the quarterfinals and a loss by fall to Hampton-Dumont-CAL's Jayson Stevens in the consolation fourth round.

Peyton went 33-12 during his senior year at 285. He topped Clarinda's Mason Nally by sudden victory, 3-1, in the championship first round and suffered losses by fall to Osage's Mac Muller in the championship second round and Independence's in the consolation second round.
