Jacksonville, Chatham Glenwood baseball advance to sectional semifinals: 3A roundup

Saturday's results

BASEBALL

NO. 2 JACKSONVILLE 4, NO. 3 ROCHESTER 0: At Jacksonville, Hayden Hicks threw a three-hit shutout and he and Anderson Decker drove in two runs apiece as Jacksonville won the regional championship.

Jacksonville (21-13) advanced to the Rochester Sectional semifinals and will play No. 4 seed Champaign Central on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Central defeated top-seeded Lincoln 2-1 to win the Lincoln Regional.

Hicks struck out seven and walked four. Hitting in the No. 2 slot, Hicks drove in Ryan Luconic with a single to give the Crimsons a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.

Jacksonville put runners on second and third in the fifth and Decker, batting leadoff, came through with a two-run single, followed with another RBI single by Hicks as the Crimsons took a commanding 4-0 advantage.

Jack Swaney took the loss for Rochester, which finished 20-14. Swaney threw three innings and allowed one hit and one earned run with two strikeouts and two walks. Eli Carlson was the reliever, and he gave up four hits and three earned runs to go with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Parker Lyons had two of the three hits for Rochester.

NO. 1 CHATHAM GLENWOOD 8, NO. 5 MOUNT ZION 4: At Chatham, Cam Appenzeller supplied himself a cushion with a 2-run double in the first inning before carving up the Braves on the mound.

The junior left-handed ace totaled 11 strikeouts in five innings of work. He gave up two runs on three hits and five walks.

Glenwood (30-5) opened with a 4-0 lead in the first beginning with Cru Erickson’s RBI double to left field, scoring Joe Anderson. Mason Marshall later knocked in Appenzeller with an RBI line drive.

The Titans added two more runs in the second. Jace Easley scored on an error, along with Erickson following a single by Krayton Reincke, who went 3-for-3 at the plate.

Erickson finished with two hits and three RBIs while Rigley Hickman erased Mount Zion’s rally with a 2-RBI double in the sixth for the final score.

Adam Wahlbrink closed out the final 1 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and one hit allowed.

Sam Driscoll led Mount Zion with two hits, including a double.

Glenwood meets No. 2 Mahomet-Seymour in the Rochester Sectional semifinals on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

NO. 4 CHAMPAIGN CENTRAL 2, NO. 1 LINCOLN 1: At Lincoln, Winning pitcher Luke McClure’s go-ahead RBI single in the top of the seventh inning propelled the Maroons to the regional title.

John Timmons set up McClure’s game-winning hit when he tripled with one out. Lincoln’s Wyatt Mammen took the loss after throwing 6 2/3 innings and allowing eight hits with five strikeouts and four walks.

Timmons scored the first run for Central when he singled and scored on a T.J. Pipkins single to give the Maroons a 1-0 lead in the top half of the fifth.

Lincoln (23-11-1) tied it in the bottom half of the fifth when Karson Komnick singled to start the inning and scored on a triple by Colbie Glenn with two outs.

McClure earned the win in relief, yielding a walk and one hit. The Railers got a runner on second in the seventh, but McClure recorded the final out. Chase Bartlett was the starter and gave up four hits, one earned run, struck out three and walked two for the Maroons.

Friday's results

SOFTBALL

NO. 2 WASHINGTON 8, NO. 5 LINCOLN 7: At Bloomington, Laila Harris and Payton Swanson rallied the Panthers to the regional title with RBI singles to fuel the decisive three-run sixth inning.

Harris hit the game-tying RBI single while Kami Barth scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Swanson then knocked in Harris with a single to left field.

Lincoln had a chance to even the score with runners in scoring position in the seventh with no outs, but only Kate Farman could push in a run on a sacrifice and Washington escaped with the win.

Jenna Flessner recorded the win in three innings of relief. She allowed one earned run on two hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Lincoln senior Taryn Stoltzenburg finished 3-for-5 with a run. Grey Gilbert scored three runs on three walks while Regan Kutz scored twice on two walks.

Kelsey Marten lifted the Railsplitters (15-22) ahead 6-5 in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly and finished with a hit and three RBIs.

Thursday's results

SOFTBALL

NO. 1 CHATHAM GLENWOOD 10, NO. 4 JACKSONVILLE 0 (5 innings): At Glenwood, Ava Bobb smoked a three-run home run and the Titans (27-5) scored eight runs in the second inning to secure their 11th straight regional title.

Bobb, a freshman shortstop, finished with two hits and two runs. Taryn Griffith supplied three hits and an RBI, including two doubles and a triple. Ryleigh Kiel had a triple and scored two runs.

Irie Lohrenz allowed one hit and struck out eight, and Glenwood advances to Tuesday's Charleston Sectional semifinals against the host Trojans, who defeated Champaign Central 8-6.

Kenzie Law took the loss for Jacksonville (9-17).
