Charlevoix wrestling claims district title; Harbor, Boyne earn boys wins

CHARLEVOIX — Fresh off a Lake Michigan Conference title on the mat, the Charlevoix wrestling team added a bit more hardware on Wednesday night.

The Rayders claimed a Division 4 wrestling team district title with a pair of dominant showings at home.

Charlevoix went 2-0 as a team and perhaps even more impressive, went 23-2 from an individual standpoint.

The Rayders opened with a 66-3 win over Onaway, then earned a 63-18 win over Inland Lakes, after the Bulldogs picked up a 42-24 win to advance to the finals against Rogers City.

Those earning a 2-0 day for Charlevoix included: Jackson Fry (106 pounds); James Kewagshken (113); Kate Matter (132/138); Anthony Wise (138/144); Jamie Parrish (150); Logan Wilks (157); Justin Whisler (165); Brady Jess (175); Trevor Streeter (190); Josh Schultz (215); and Sawyer Blasczyzk (Hwt.).

Charlevoix’s Adam Streeter also went 1-0 exhibition match in the heavyweight class. Senior Landon Swanson was out on the day due to sickness.

Those earning titles during the Lake Michigan Conference championships included Fry (2-0); Wilks (2-0); Whisler (3-0); Jess (4-0); and Swanson (3-0).

Runner-up finishers and honorable mention all-conference members included Wise (4-1); Parrish (1-1); Trevor Streeter (1-1); and Blasczyzk (4-1).

Charlevoix will next head to Manistique for individual districts on Saturday, Feb. 10.

BOYS BASKETBALL 

Elk Rapids 55, Charlevoix 41

CHARLEVOIX — A low-scoring opening quarter eventually flipped for Elk Rapids Thursday, while host Charlevoix never found an offensive groove and eventually fell in a 55-41 final.

“I thought our defense was solid early, just rushed a few shots and had a couple of good looks that did not fall,” Charlevoix coach Anthony Troshak said. “Elk Rapids slowly pulled away. Haven Somers had some big baskets for them in the second half. Elk Rapids is athletic across the board and did a good job tonight.”

Hudson Vollmer led Charlevoix with 12 points, Joe Gaffney score 11 and Ryan Pearl had six.

Somers finished with 17 points to lead the Elks.

Charlevoix (14-4, 8-4) will next travel to Bellaire on Monday, Feb. 12, the start of three straight road games to close the season.

Boyne City 53, East Jordan 37

EAST JORDAN — A balanced night across the Boyne City lineup brought the Rambler boys a 53-37 victory on the road against rival East Jordan Thursday.

“It’s always tough to play in that gym. Fans are loud and bring the energy,” Boyne coach Robby Jensen said. “Our boys handled the pressure and made the shots we needed. Another great defensive showing and handling the ball with better poise.”

Ryan Spate led with 13 points, Chas Stanek scored 12, Jaden Alger had 11 and seven rebounds and Drew Neer had nine points.

For East Jordan, Korbyn Russell led with 16 points and three assists and Ryder Malpass scored 11.

“Credit to Boyne, as they made us pay for every mistake we made on defenses,” EJ coach Nate Dzwik said. “Korbyn hit some shots to keep us in the game and I thought Ryder did a good job of getting to the rim and attacking.  Definitely a lot of things to learn from in the game.”

East Jordan (6-11, 2-9) gets in a makeup game with Grayling up next on Monday, Feb. 12, then welcomes Kalkaska a night later on Tuesday, Feb. 13. Boyne City (12-7, 8-5) will head to Gaylord up next for a varsity doubleheader on Tuesday, Feb. 13.

Harbor Springs 62, Kalkaska 49

KALKASKA — The Harbor Springs boys kept things rolling within Lake Michigan play Thursday, earning their sixth win over their last seven games in a 62-49 victory over Kalkaska.

Sophomore standouts Rider Bartel and Braeden Flynn returned to form as well, with Bartel finishing with 24 points and Flynn scoring 22. The two combined for seven 3-pointers in the game.

Ryan Novak also had six and Nash VanSloten had five.

Harbor Springs (12-6, 9-4) will visit Harbor Light Christian on Monday, Feb. 12 up next, then welcome in Traverse City St. Francis on Thursday, Feb. 15.

Boyne Falls 77, Alba 7 

ALBA — Keaton Matelski scored a new career-high 37 points for the Boyne Falls boys’ basketball team as the Loggers earned a 77-7 win over Alba Thursday night.

The Loggers led in a 42-5 game at the break, then allowed just a single basket the rest of the way.

Bryce Tonsor scored 13 points for Boyne Falls and JT Greenier also had 12.

Boyne Falls (4-12, 2-10) will next meet Petoskey St. Michael in a non-conference game on Friday, Feb. 9.

HOCKEY 

Petoskey 4, Gaylord 2

PETOSKEY — The late-season surge from the Petoskey hockey team grew Wednesday night when they welcomed in rival Gaylord and earned a 4-2 victory over the Blue Devils.

It comes on the heels of a 4-0 victory the first time around against Gaylord and built a four-game win streak for Petoskey.

The victory helped get the Northmen to 13-7-1 overall on the season and 4-5 within the BNC.

Noah Bodurka brought in a two-goal game for Petoskey, while Lynus Cadarette and Kameron Horn each scored one goal. Wyatt Stemple also added an assist.

Petoskey has just four games remaining on the season, with a trip to Alpena up next on Friday, followed by a visit from Traverse City Central on Wednesday, Feb. 14.
