Chardon at Bishop Watterson football: Preview capsule for Sept. 15 game

Sep. 14—Chardon at Bishop Watterson

What: Non-conference game

When: 7 p.m., Sept. 15

Where: Watterson, Matt Hagley Field, 100 Arcadia Ave., Columbus

Records: Chardon 3-1, Bishop Watterson 4-0

Last week: Chardon def. St. Francis, N.Y., 35-20, Bishop Watterson def. Tiffin Columbian, 33-14

For the record: Chardon hits the road for another long trip this week on a two-game winning streak since its last long trip — a Week 2 jaunt to Tiffin Columbian where they took a 50-49 loss. Watterson trounced Columbian, 33-14, last week, so it stands to reason this is another tough test for Coach Mitch Hewitt's crew. ... Chardon ran for 314 yards last week, with Will Francis (128) and Drago Vujaklija (93) doing most of the heavy lifting. Running the ball hasn't been a problem, but stopping the pass has. That's what hurt Chardon at Tiffin Columbian, and St. Francis hit the Hilltoppers for 172 passing yards last week. ... Watterson throws the ball very well — and apparently defends it well, too, after holding Columbian to only 14 points last week. QB AJ McAninch, headed to Marshall on a baseball scholarship, anchors the passing game. LB Dominic Purcell was All-Ohio a year ago and has committed to Navy. Kicker Rudy Kessinger was first team All-Ohio last year as well. DB Elliott Baur is headed to college to play lacrosse.
