ORCHARD PARK - When September ended, it would have been hard to believe that now, as the NFL schedule reaches mid-November, the Buffalo Bills are on the outside looking in at the seven-team AFC playoff bracket.

Coming off their 48-20 blowout of the previously high-flying Miami Dolphins, the Bills were on a three-game winning streak where they outscored their opponents 123-33. Since then, the Bills’ offense has become sputtering and stagnant, the defense has been ravaged by major injuries, the special teams have been mediocre at best, and the Bills have gone 2-3.

They enter Monday night’s game against the Denver with a 5-4 record which is just a game behind Miami in the AFC East, but a half-game behind 5-3 Cincinnati who currently holds the third and final wild-card position thanks to the Bengals 24-18 victory over the Bills last Sunday.

Obviously, the Bills need to beat the 3-5 Broncos, who are one of only two teams left on Buffalo’s schedule with a sub-.500 record (the Patriots are the other, and they’ve already beaten the Bills). There cannot be a repeat of that debacle against New England because a loss to Denver - given the difficulty of the games ahead - could be a death knell for Buffalo’s playoff chances.
