Celtics president Brad Stevens, coach Ime Udoka share status of Jaylen Brown’s hamstring tightness ahead of Bucks series

A subtle but important wrinkle lingering from the Boston Celtics’ Game 4 win over the Brooklyn Nets is the status of star Celtics forward Jaylen Brown’s hamstring, which the Georgia native let slip had been tight in that game in a postgame sideline interview.

At present, it seems that Boston has the clear advantage in the team’s Eastern Conference Semifinals series with the Milwaukee Bucks with Milwaukee’s second-leading scorer — forward Khris Middleton — out for the entirety of the series. But that could shift to a dead heat if Brown ends up needing to sit out as well. In his usual weekly appearance on WEEI’s “Toucher and Rich” show, Boston team president Brad Stevens shared some information on the status of the Cal-Berkeley product’s hamstring.

“There’s some concern,” said Stevens. “He was definitely tight, even the next day.”

“So, we’re going to tread lightly this week, as we have a couple of days off, and then see how he’s doing,” added the Celtics president.

“But it’s certainly something that we’re going to be all over, hamstrings are nothing to play around with — he certainly felt that a little bit the next day.”

Asked about the specifics of how hamstring tightness is treated, Stevens replied “From my perspective, I listen to the report from our head of performance.

“The person that’s treating them — the physiotherapist that treats and then is in constant contact with them. We get constant updates and constant reports. Jaylen is a big part of that process. Scans are always taken if necessary, all that stuff. There’s a whole long process, and when you say ‘How do you treat them?,’ I listen to the experts, and I give whatever timeline I’m given.”

“I answer questions on the radio about it and act like I know what I’m talking about,” joked Stevens.

Later in the day during the Celtics’ post-practice media availability, Boston head coach Ime Udoka was asked about Brown’s hamstring tightness as well.

“JB had some tightness in his hamstring at the end of the game, so we’re managing that as the week goes. He had it looked at yesterday, and he’s just going to manage that with the strength team.”

For now, it seems that Brown’s recurrent hamstring issues signaled potential trouble could be on the horizon before it became a problem. It will be key for Boston to manage a notoriously tricky injury issue — and mistakes could have serious implications for the Celtics’ postseason.
