CBS Sports way-too-early top 25 has Michigan basketball as the best Big Ten team

Michigan basketball was ranked inside the top 10 when the 2021 season began last year, but things really spiraled out of control — fast. The Wolverines found themselves unranked by week five in the AP poll, and things were really looking bleak that featured Hunter Dickinson, Eli Brooks, and two five-star freshmen.

But, the maize and blue played their way into the NCAA tournament, and Michigan made a quality run that ended in the Sweet 16 to Villanova.

This offseason has been a whirlwind for the Wolverines. Michigan shockingly got Hunter Dickinson back after he didn’t entertain the NBA draft and the Wolverines gained the services of Princeton transfer Jaelin Llewellyn. But the Wolverines lost projected starting point guard Frankie Collins to the transfer portal.

While we’re waiting to hear what Moussa Diabate and Caleb Houstan ultimately decide to do — if they stay in the NBA draft, or return to Michigan for their sophomore seasons — CBS Sports updated its way-too-early top 25. Here is what they had to say about the Wolverines.

The Wolverines’ ranking is based on a returning core of Hunter Dickinson and Moussa Diabate being joined by an incoming class highlighted by Princeton transfer Jaelin Llewellyn and top-40 prospect Jett Howard, the latter of whom was named MVP at the Iverson Classic. Michigan looks like the favorite in the Big Ten.

Here is where the rest of the Big Ten are ranked at: Indiana(17), Purdue(22), Ohio State(24), and Michigan State(25).
