Cheboygan's Elise Markham voted Daily Tribune's Athlete of the Week for April 15-20

CHEBOYGAN – Cheboygan freshman girls soccer player Elise Markham has been voted the Daily Tribune’s Athlete of the Week for April 15-20.

In another close voting battle, Markham’s 37.91 percent of the vote outlasted Onaway senior track and field athlete Xavier Santiago, who captured 37.18 percent of the vote.

Voting began on Tuesday morning and closed at 11 p.m. on Thursday night. Over 1,200 votes were cast during this week’s poll.

Next week’s athletes of the week nominees will be revealed on Tuesday, April 30.

Here were this week’s nominees:

Elise Markham, Cheboygan Girls Soccer – Scored four goals in a win over Big Rapids Crossroads.

Jersey Beauchamp, Mackinaw City Softball – Recorded a double, two singles, three RBIs and four runs scored in a win over Brimley.

Aidan Fenstermaker, Inland Lakes Baseball – Finished with three hits, four RBIs and three runs scored in a win over JoBurg.

Xavier Santiago, Onaway Track and Field – Broke his own school record with a 6-8 ½ jump in the high jump during a meet at Bellaire.

Lanie Irwin, Pellston Softball – Recorded three singles in a victory over Gaylord St. Mary.
