Durfee athletes fare well at freshman/sophomore meet: Top performers for Jan. 2-6

BOSTON — The Durfee track and field competed in the MSTCA freshman/sophomore state championship meet on Saturday and had many outstanding performances.

Curtis Mowatt took first place in the long jump with a season-best leap of 20-8.25. Earlier this season, the sophomore athlete broke the school record in the long jump, jumping 21-1.75. Mowatt also ran a 6.96 in the 55 dash.

Other top performers include Thysh Garcia-Martinez, who finished in seventh place in the 55 dash with a time of 7.80. Jose Chicas toppled his personal-record mark in the mile with a time of 5:12.07.

Shayla Harrison sets a personal-best time in the 55 dash (8.29).

Somerset Berkley Indoor Track

The Raiders dropped their meet against Greater New Bedford, 54-32. For the boys, Joseph Ramos won the shot put with a toss of 47'4.5". Camden Rose won the 300 and Andrew Heroux won the 600. For the girls, Emily Carr won the 55 hurdles and 55 dash. Lauren Kanuse won high jump.

Boys Basketball

Avonte Lamore scored a season-high 25 points to lead the Hilltoppers to a 103-26 home win over Excel. Jayden Souza finished with 20 points and Eli Chace added 10 points for Durfee (4-4).

Hockey

Landen Freitas tallied four goals to lead the Bengals to a 9-4 win over Tri-County. Jesse Costa and Jacob Almeida each had a pair of goals while Matt Almeida and Kane Aguiar finished with a goal. Bryce Medeiros and Jacoby Brouliard each finished with three assists. Almeida and Ryan Sandford contributed two assists 2 while Aguiar and Evan Camara each had an assist for Diman (6-2-1).

Kien Stafford netted a pair of goals to lead the Raiders to a 6-4 win over Seekonk/Dighton-Rehoboth. Nate Mello, Liam Derocher, Carter Silvia and Adyn Marcos also scored goals. Mason Sullivan, Jon Rothwell, Aaron Preston, Steve Erickson and Cam McKenna each had an assists. Brandon Silva stopped 17 shots in net for SBR (5-1-1).

Friday

Boys Basketball

Finn Bjork led all scorers with a game-high 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Raiders (5-0; 4-0 in SCC) in a 77-44 win over Fairhaven. Mason Mederios had 13 points and four rebounds while Will Dionne added 10 points. Dom Taylor contributed nine points and five rebounds. Brendan McDonald finished with eight points, seven assists and six rebounds.

Landon Cayton netted a game-high 30 pts and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Cardinals to their fourth straight win against Greater New Bedford, 56-53. Cayden Gonsalves had a season-high 18 points. Jack Orton, Chris Gaboriault, Aiden Parent, and Cam Paiva were tremendous on the boards for Case (6-2; 3-1 in SCC).

Anthony DeJesus had a team-high 18 points to lead the Bengals to a 61-42 win over Atlantis Charter. Si’Air Neal chipped in 14 points while Sam Perry and Sakai Silver each had nine points. Aiden Bigelow, Alex Decoste and Kayden Dias also played well for Diman (2-3). Mickey Pimentel scored a team-high 18 points for the Tritons (3-3) while DJ Adediran added 12 points.

Girls Basketball

Mia Gentile scored a season-high 30 points to lead the Raiders to a 86-20 victory over Fairhaven. Hannah Carpenter added 16 points and Karlie Cosme finished with 10 points for SBR (3-2).

Liberty Gazaille had a team-high 14 points and five assists for the Cardinals in Greater New Bedford's 51-44 win. Emma Plante scored 11 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and finished with seven assists. Madilyn Botelho finished win double figures with 10 points. Lily Picard had nine points and seven rebounds for Case (4-4, 1-4 in SCC).

Thursday

Girls Swimming

Despite great diving performances by Rachael Silva (257.70), Madison Ferreira (195.05), and Sarah Raposa (190.10) on Thursday, the Hilltoppers dropped their home meet, 113-66, to Bishop Feehan. Ferreira stamped her ticket back into the MIAA state finals. The 400 freestyle relay team of Zoie Mussotte, Gretta Moniz, Haley Alves, and Gillian Tiburtino won (5:26.13) for Durfee (1-4).

Boys Swimming

For the boys, the 400 free relay as the team of Reed White, Logan Vandenburgh, William Pierce, and William Rumsey swam a season-best 4:21.15 in a Shamrocks 110-65 win over the Hilltoppers (3-2).

Wednesday

Boys Basketball

Jeyden Espinal poured in 25 points for the Hilltoppers in Attleboro's close 80-77 win. Jahmier Stephenson netted 22 points while Eric Lucas and Alvin Gaston each finished with nine points. Davontae Stewart added eight points for Durfee (3-4).

Girls Basketball

Maggie O’Connell recorded a team-high 18 points for the Hilltoppers in Attleboro's 46-35 win. Maddie Hargraves had nine points and Julia Hargraves chipped in with six points for Durfee (4-3).

Ice Hockey

Mason Sullivan scored a pair of goals and had an assist to lift the Raiders to a 4-1 win over Old Rochester. Nate Melo and Kien Stafford also scored goals for SBR (4-1-1; 2-0 in SCC). Liam Derocher finished with a pair of assists while Jon Rothwell and Luke Gauvin added assists. Brandon Silva stopped 13 shots on net.

Jacob Almeida netted a hat trick as Diman/Durfee/Westport co-op team defeated South Shore, 7-3. Jesse Costa had a pair of goals and Bryce Medeiros and Matt Almeida (first high school goal) also scored. Landon Freitas chipped in with three assists while Kane Aguiar and Jacoby Brouliard each finished with two assists. Owen Vernon, Jared Martins and Evan Camara also recorded a point for Diman (5-2-1). Trent Souza stopped 24 shots.

Boys Indoor Track

Phoenix Bennett won the 300 (37.82) and took second in the 55 (7.08) for the Bengals in Southeastern's 75-25 win. Asafe Penha won the 55 dash (7.04) and Cashton Richard took second in the 600 (1:34), third in the 55 hurdles (9.22), and third in shot put (33' 5"). Macauley Crossman placed second place in the two-mile and third place in the mile. Benjamin Bannister took third place in the 1000 and in high jump for Diman (2-1).

Girls Indoor Track

Inez Medeiros won the 300 (7.76), the 55 dash (7.79) and took second place in the long jump in the Bengals, 66-34, win over Southeastern. Emma Foley won the 55 hurdles (9.45), the long jump (14' 10), and took second in the 55. Alexah Pedder was a double winner in the mile and the 1000. Grace Flattery won the high jump (4'8) and took second in the 300. Isabelle Chekares won the 600 (1:57) while Lylah Thibeault took second place in the two-mile and third in the mile. The 4x400 relay team of Mary Anne Lopes, Isabelle Chekares, Nicole Mota and Danica Felizberto won for Diman (3-0).

Boys Swimming

Jack Fitzgerald took first place in the 50 free and Micah Ross scored a 160.35 to win the dive event for the Hilltoppers in Foxboro's 90-74 win. Michael Harrington (500 free), Forrest Malo and Reed White in the 100 breaststroke swam well for Durfee (3-1).

Girls Swimming

Casey Carvalho qualifying for Diving south sectionals with a score of 188.00, placing third in the event for the Hilltoppers in a 97-63 win over Foxboro. Rachael Silva and Madison Ferriera place first and second respectively to round out the top three divers. Avery Antunes and Abigail Saunders went one-and-two in the 50 freestyle, with Saunders taking the 100 freestyle later in the meet. Saunders, Antunes joined Paitynn Bothelo and Gillian Tiburtino in the winning 200 free relay. Claire Bjerre won first place in the 100 breaststroke for Durfee (1-3).

Tuesday

Boys Basketball

Landon Cayton scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed six rebounds to help the Cardinals nip league opponent Apponequet on road, 56-53. Cayden Gonsalves had 14 points and four assists while Aiden Parent finished with nine points and 10 rebounds. Cam Paiva was huge off the bench, adding eight boards.

Finn Bjork scored a team-high 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the Raiders' 73-53 road win over Greater New Bedford. Colten Pacheco finished with 14 points and Mason Medeiros chipped in with nine points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals for unbeaten SBR (4-0), who recorded 25 steals in the win.

The Tritons overcame a first half deficit to beat Sturgis West on the road, 44-40. Mickey Pimental led all scorers with 20 points. DJ Adediran scored 11 second half points, including a clutch three-pointer with under 30 seconds to go. Other scorers for Atlantis Charter (3-2) includes Genald George (six), Marv Antoine (four) and Nate Benivedes (three).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Karlie Cosme netted a team-high 17 points to help the Raiders beat Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech., 60-36. Mia Gentile scored 15 points and Hannah Carpenter added 13 points. SBR (2-2) finished with 11 steals and five blocks in the win.

Liberty Gazaille had a team-high 11 points and eight rebounds in a tough 61-30 loss to Apponequet. Emma Plante finished with eight points and 10 rebounds. Kambree Nell added four points and four steals for Case (4-3).
