Carolina Panthers sign Oregon defensive tackle Popo Aumavae as undrafted free agent

The Carolina Panthers have reportedly signed Oregon DT Popo Aumavae as an undrafted free agent.

Aumavae plays like a traditional nose tackle, clogging the middle, taking on blockers and meeting ball carriers head on. Aumavae’s final season as a Duck was his seventh in Eugene. Between a traditional redshirt season as a true freshman in 2017, the noncounting pandemic season of 2020 and then a medical redshirt in 2022, Aumavae played in 51 games for Oregon.

Popo Aumavae highlights at Oregon football

Aumavae’s best season was in 2021 when he was named first-team all-Pac-12 by the Associated Press and Pro Football Focus. That season he had a career-high 36 tackles, including 3.0 for a loss of yards.

How Popo Aumavae performed at Oregon's Pro Day

Aumavae wasn’t invited to the NFL Scouting Combine but at Oregon’s Pro Day he ran an 5.16-second 40-yard dash, 4.83 in the shuttle run and clocked in at 8.03 in the 3-cone drill. He also had a 29.5-inch vertical jump, reached 9-0 in the broad jump and benched 225 pounds 17 times.
