Cardinals P Carlos Martinez sued, accused of breaking man's back in strip-club attack
A man has sued Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez, accusing him of being a part of a group that allegedly jumped him outside a St. Louis-area strip club in 2014 and left him with a broken back and more than $100,000 in medical bills.
Andrew D’Angelo describes a situation where he was at a bar and had a verbal altercation with a group that included Martinez and late Cardinals player Oscar Taveras, who died in a 2014 car accident in his native Dominican Republic, the Belleville News-Democrat details.
D’Angelo left the bar to go to the Penthouse Club, a strip club now called the Diamond Cabaret, where Martinez and his group eventually showed up. D’Angelo went outside of the club to a food stand where he was jumped by Martinez’s group, knocked to the ground and beaten on his head and face, the lawsuit alleges.
D’Angelo’s attorney John Eccher told the News-Democrat that his client suffered a broken back and had more than $100,000 in medical bills “with further surgical procedures being needed.”
The News-Democrat reports that a spokesman for Martinez did not respond to a request for comment.
The lawsuit also names the group that owns the Diamond Cabaret as a defendant, alleging that the club did not provide proper security and failed to call the police until “well after” the attack.
Martinez, a five-year MLB veteran with the Cardinals, posted a 12-11 record with a 3.64 ERA in 2017.
