Cardinal boys start slow, fall twice to LHC rivals

Jan. 24—GRIMES — Caleb Mattes played the best game of his varsity basketball career, but the Newton boys couldn't overcome a slow start against Dallas Center-Grimes on Tuesday.

The Mustangs dropped 20 points in the opening quarter and led by double-digits before going on to down the Cardinals 72-59 during Little Hawkeye Conference play.

It was DCG's fifth straight win as it completed the season sweep of the Cardinals. The Mustangs are now 12-4 against Newton since 2017.

Newton trailed 20-8 after one quarter but was only outscored by one in the final three quarters.

Mattes posted a career-high 23 points and added seven rebounds, six assists and four steals in the loss.

Christian Lawson tallied nine points, three rebounds and two assists, Caden Klein chipped in eight points and two rebounds and Christian Ergenbright put in a career-best nine points on 3-of-3 shooting from 3-point range.

Cade Bauer registered three points, two rebounds and two assists, Nate Lampe chipped in three rebounds and two assists and Hunter Teague put in four points. Landon Bozarth scored three points.

The Cardinals (4-6, 3-5 in the conference) shot 38.8 percent from the floor, drained 11-of-24 from 3 and connected on 10-of-18 from the free-throw line.

The Mustangs shot 57.7 percent from the floor, drilled 3-of-16 from 3 and canned 9-of-10 from the foul line. DCG (10-2, 5-1) out-rebounded Newton 34-20.

Calix Cahill led the hosts with 19 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Jackson Green added 18 points and five boards and Brogan Fuller registered 11 points, six rebounds, five assists and three blocks.

Norwalk 59, Newton 51

The Cardinals overcame a slow start with a big second quarter but struggled to close out the game in the fourth during a home loss to Norwalk on Monday.

Newton got a career-high 22 points from Klein, and the Cardinals made 12 treys but the Warriors dominated the final frame during a 59-51 win in LHC action.

The Warriors led 21-9 after one, but Newton countered with a 25-8 advantage in the second to go into halftime with the lead.

Norwalk inched closer with a 13-12 third frame but pulled in front for good with a 17-5 advantage in the fourth.

Klein's big night also included four assists and two rebounds. He was a career-best 6-of-8 from 3, too.

Lawson posted a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double, Lampe added eight points, three rebounds and three assists and Bauer chipped in eight points, two rebounds and two assists.

Mattes grabbed three rebounds and dished out two assists and Teague handed out two assists.

The Cardinals shot 43 percent from the floor, made 12-of-24 from 3 and buried 1-of-8 from the foul line.

Redek Born, a Northern Iowa commit, led the Warriors (9-2, 6-0) with 14 points and six assists and Cameron Thomas had 10 points and 12 rebounds. Five Norwalk players reached double figures.

The Warriors shot 50 percent from the floor, made 8-of-20 from 3 and connected on 9-of-15 from the foul line. Norwalk out-rebounded Newton 30-22.
