Cardinal bowlers roll past Norwalk

Nov. 21—Three Cardinals from the Newton boys' bowling team posted 200-plus scores and a fourth rolled a 191 during the team's season opener on Monday.

The Newton boys finished about 30 pins shy of a school record but dominated Norwalk at Cardinal Lanes. The Newton girls also posted a varsity win over the Warriors.

"The boys were on fire last night," Newton head bowling coach Christie Hughes said. "It was pretty awesome to watch them yesterday.

"I'm impressed with the hard work both teams are putting in so far, and I expect great things from all of our bowlers this year."

The Cardinal boys downed Norwalk 3,046 to 2,449. The Newton JV boys also had a better team score than Norwalk's varsity with a 2,495.

Owen Guldberg opened the night with a 245 and added a 201 for a 446 series. Austin Kennedy was second with single games of 225 and 198 for a 423 series.

The Newton girls slipped past Norwalk 2,095 to 1,905. Libbie Keith claimed the individual win with a 417 series. She had single games of 201 and 216.

The Cardinals led Norwalk 2,021 to 1,589 after the individual games on the boys' side.

Newton improved its lead with a 1,025 to 860 advantage in the five Baker games. The hosts had Baker games of 237, 236 and 213.

Finishing third was Newton's Andrew Wiles, who rolled a 418 series with single games of 221 and 197. Tamion Adams finished fifth with a 370 (179-191) and Sebastian King was sixth with a 364 (163-201).

Carter Maki rolled a 297 series with single games of 168 and 129. Alex Kearse led the JV boys with a 371 series, but Ethan Valtman (341), David Holmes (333), Gentry Swarts (324) and Jaret Sweeney (305) all posted series of 300 or better.

Norwalk's Andrew Winfrey was fourth overall in the varsity matchup with a 377 series.

"The boys were on a mission to beat the school record as a team right out of the gate," Hughes said. "They fell about 30 pins short, but that was the highest team score we've bowled at home during my coaching career."

Finishing second behind Keith in the girls' matchup was Norwalk's Julia Palen, who finished with a 349 series. Her teammate, Ellery Racz, was third with a 309.

Newton's Gabbie Humphrey finished fourth with a 294 series after rolling single games of 156 and 138.

Genessa Slings, who was feeling a bit under the weather, rolled single games of 124 and 141 for a 265 series. She was fifth.

Kelly Holmes placed sixth with a 236 series, while Marissa Burns (212) and Alex Schultz (197) were eighth and ninth, respectively. Aeris Archer led the JV girls with a 252 series.

The Cardinals varsity girls' team was without No. 4 bowler Maria Baxim, who missed the meet due to personal reasons.
