It was a Hollywood ending to a storied high school career for Canton South High School senior slugger Evelyn Lynn.

Down to her final varsity softball at-bat and one away from tying the state home run record, Lynn stepped into the batter's box and made magic happen. She smacked her 60th career home run to tie Mount Vernon's Hope Straight for the Ohio's unofficial career home run record.

"I was feeling a lot of pressure going into that final at-bat," Lynn said. "I was really in my head all game but I settled down during that last at-bat. After I saw the ball go over the fence I actually started crying. It was an incredibly emotional moment for me."

Unfortunately, the record didn't stand for too long. Evergreen senior catcher Macy Chamberlin hit two home runs in her final game against Port Clinton on the same day, giving her 61 homers to break the record held by Lynn and Straight.

That changes little. It was still a brilliant end to a storied career for Lynn. She exits with numerous school records and the Stark County home run record.

"I feel very accomplished," Lynn said. "I felt like I had a great career and had a lot of fun. Hopefully some of those records I set will stand for a while."

Lynn was in the midst of taking her final exams as a high school senior recently. She will soon move on to play softball for Hocking Hills College.

"They have a softball program and they also had the academic program that I was looking for," Lynn said. "It's also an outdoorsy-type environment at Hocking Hills. I love being outside and in nature so it was a really good fit for me."

Lynn will be pursuing a unique academic program at Hocking Hills.

"I wanted to go to school to train service animals," Lynn said. "They have a program and I'm very excited about it. You get to bring your own dog to go through the program with. I'm actually going to various Humane Societies and looking for one that will fit the program right now."

That process has proven more difficult than hitting home runs.

"It's hard because there are a lot of really great dogs," Lynn said. "It's always hard to leave them. I met a great dog the other day but he just didn't quite fit the needs of the program. It was difficult not to take him home."
