Calvary’s diminutive Lady Cav sparks team to win over No. 1 North DeSoto

STONEWALL — In a game that featured Louisiana’s best two teams in their respective classifications and a bushel of next level talent, it was one of the most diminutive of athletes who had one of the biggest impacts.

The fact LHSAA Select Division III No. 1 Calvary Baptist outlasted LHSAA Non-Select Division II No. 1 North DeSoto 6-4 in front of a standing room only crowd of more than a thousand showed that quality high school softball might just be on the verge of rivaling NCAA women’s basketball in fan attention.

The game featured some behemoth hitters in Arkansas signee Ramsey “Rambo” Walker, DJ Lynch and Carlie Guile of Calvary (28-1), along with Louisiana Lafayette signee Mia Norwood, Payton Miller and Carsyn Curtis of North DeSoto (24-5). All, except Walker, who was pitched around in each plate appearance, homered in the game.

But Calvary’s Brynn Robinson, a sprite less than five feet tall and weighing about as much as an average beach umbrella, started the Lady Cavs off and running in the second inning. Looking like she stepped off a Harry Potter set or out of a Taylor Swift support group, the bespeckled Robinson stepped to the plate in the second inning with two outs and promptly delivered a slap single to right field.

That allowed leadoff hitter Lynch, who hits home runs with regularity, to deliver a shot that put her team in front 3-0 over the two-time defending LHSAA state champions on their home field.

“As a part of this 2024 Calvary team I’m proud we could come out and have a big win and show who we are and that we can beat anybody,” said Robinson, a seventh grader playing varsity for the first time. “It was just another day.”

The game featured a couple of future collegiate pitchers in North DeSoto’s Laney Johnson, a Louisiana Tech signee, and Calvary sophomore Kynzee Anderson, who dominated Friday’s contest with 11 strikeouts while also giving up three home runs.

“What was working today was the curve, the screw — the rise was a little iffy, but I relied mostly on the curve and the screw,” Anderson said. “It was an amazing moment for our team. We propped up the chairs.”
