Byng opens season with wet win over Stonewall
Mar. 23—BYNG — The Byng High School softball team didn't let a few scattered showers rain on their season-opening parade Thursday evening at the Bobby Johnson Softball Complex.
Byng scored five runs in their first at-bat and coasted past local foe Stonewall 7-2. There was light, steady rainfall throughout the contest that was finally stopped when lightning sensors picked up a nearby strike with one out in the top of the sixth inning. Less than 15 minutes later, officials decided to call the contest after radar showed the weather wasn't going to improve any time soon.
The Lady Pirates were scheduled to play at Roff on Friday and travel to Davis on Monday.
The Lady Longhorns are headed to the Oklahoma High School Slow Pitch Showdown today at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City where they'll play three games against Cleveland, Vici and Canute.
Byng 7, Stonewall 2
Stonewall got on the scoreboard first when Lilly Wyche led off the game with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Faith Ross to put the visitors on top 1-0. Later in the first inning, Sierra Lumbert and Kaylee Ross hit back-to-back base hits but those two runners were left stranded.
Byng started off the bottom of the first frame with back-to-back walks to Hannah Wort and McKenzie Alford. Alona Cooper-Rochovitz followed with an RBI double that knotted the score at 1-1.
Paige Ridgway followed by punching a base hit to right field that scored a pair of runs that put the Lady Pirates ahead 3-1.
Hailey Alexander's base hit and a Stonewall error put runners at second and third before freshman Piper Presley blasted a double off the wall in left field that pushed across two more BHS runs to make it 5-1.
Wort cracked a one-out triple in the bottom of the second and raced home on a sacrifice fly by Alford that gave Byng a 6-1 advantage.
Stonewall scored its final run in the top of the third inning when Faith Ross reached on an error, hustled all the way to third base on the play and scored when Lumbert flew out to second base to cut the SHS deficit to 6-2.
The Lady Longhorns had a chance for more when they loaded the bases on walks to Kaylee Ross and Landree Dye sandwiched around a base hit from Madi Davis but a flyout to center field ended that SHS uprising.
Byng scored its final run of the contest when Paige Ridgway led off the bottom of the third inning with a double and later scored on a sac fly from Leigh Ridgway.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Leigh Ridgway led off with a base hit and after the first out, lightning was detected and the game eventually ended at that point.
Byng finished with seven total hits. Paige Ridgway was the only BHS player with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Stonewall also collected seven hits. Davis led her team with a 2-of-3 effort.
