Buffalo Bills vs. Pittsburgh Steelers: Team connections

The Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers will play against each other and the highest of stakes will be attached to the game: Win or go home.

The Bills (11-6) and Steelers (10-7) will do battle during the upcoming NFL Wild-Card round. However, the game will have a little bit more meaning attached to it for a few players in particular.

That’s because multiple players or coaches for both sides are going to be playing against their former teams. That can create a little bit of extra motivation for them heading into Sunday… as expected.

With that, here’s a quick list of connections the two teams have with one another ahead of the upcoming matchup at Highmark Stadium:

Steelers QB Mitchell Trubisky

In March 2022, Trubisky signed a contract with the Steelers after spending only one year in Buffalo. That was always the plan for him.

Trubisky inked a deal with the Bills with the idea that he’d just take one season to backup Josh Allen. When a chance to start came about, Trubisky jumped on it in Pittsburgh… but now he’s backing up Mason Rudolph.

Formerly the No. 2 starting cornerback across from Tre’Davious White, Wallace left the Bills for the Steelers as a free agent during the 2022 offseason.

That came after Buffalo signed Wallace to only short-term deals over a few years. The Bills not wanting to commit to Wallace for the long haul made Wallace’s departure always seem like a matter of time, but he’s still seeing snaps in Pittsburgh.

Matakevich has strictly been a special teams ace for the Bills since he signed with the team in 2020. He held the same role with the Steelers at the start of his career in 2016.

It’s almost just a tradition now, but when the Bills and Steelers play it’s always noted that the head coaches went to college together. Sean McDermott and Mike Tomlin played football at William & Mary.
