Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin enters concussion protocol

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin is in the league’s concussion protocol.

Coach Bruce Arians told reporters on Wednesday that Godwin hadn’t developed any symptoms until mid-week. He did not attend Wednesday’s practice.

“He did not show any symptoms on Monday or Tuesday but he is now so we are being really careful with him,” Arians told reporters, via Gabrielle Shirley of WFLA in Tampa.

Godwin was Tom Brady’s main target on Sunday in a 34-23 loss to the New Orleans Saints. He had six catches on seven targets for 79 yards. The fourth-year player out of Penn State took a helmet-to-helmet hit from the Saints’ D.J. Swearinger during the fourth quarter and left the game. It resulted in a penalty on the play.

Last week, receiver Mike Evans did not practice until Friday due to a hamstring strain. He was doubtful for the season opener, but did play and caught one of his four targets for two yards.

Brady threw two interceptions in the loss and was criticized by Arians in the aftermath. The coach also called on his receivers to do a better job of winning their one-on-one matchups. The Buccaneers host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday afternoon.
