Buck Showalter on Max Scherzer's desire to meet with Mets front office: ‘I’m sure that’s how he feels’

Apr 10, 2022; Washington, District of Columbia, USA; New York Mets relief pitcher Max Scherzer (21) speaks with New York Mets manager Buck Showalter (11) in the dugout during the fifth inning of the game against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park.

The Mets won their second consecutive game Friday night but for the second straight day it was overshadowed by what happened afterwards.

David Robertson being dealt after Thursday’s win took the shine off that victory and Max Scherzer’s comments about wanting to have a conversation with the Mets front office did the same last night.

In case you missed it, the future Hall of Famer was asked after Friday’s game what he thought of the Robertson deal and how it makes him feel about being with the club. Scherzer, visibly frustrated, was honest without getting into too much detail on his inner thoughts.

Scherzer’s honesty doesn’t surprise manager Buck Showalter who was asked about the righty’s comments prior to Saturday’s game.

"I’m sure it was in response to some question. If someone asks him a question he’s going to answer it,” he said. “I’m sure that’s how he feels. Max has made it very clear why he gets up in the morning. He wants it to be here. That's the way he's always felt.

“He likes it here, he's taking it on and all the responsibilities that come with it. … He's an open book which is why he’s one of my favorite guys that I have. He’s blatantly honest and frank …. I’m sure that’s how he feels. I don’t begrudge somebody for feeling what they feel. You don’t always have to agree with everything but you do respect that. He’s earned it.”

Despite the back-to-back wins, the Mets still sit five games below .500 (49-54) and 6.5 games out of the final Wild Card spot entering Saturday. While mathematically still in the playoff race, their chances of making it to the postseason currently sits at 16.6 percent, according to FanGraphs.

Showalter was also asked if he believes a team can make a run after their team sells at the deadline and the longtime skipper said he does.

“Guys at this level, if you want them to do something tell them they can’t do it,” he said. “Ability plays at this level. We talk about attitude and makeup and that’s very important but talent plays too. If you can get all three of those things you can get something special.”

The Mets will look to push their win streak to three games when Carlos Carrasco takes the mound tonight against the Nationals.
